    Engine noise?

Last winter i removed all the insulation on my car. After that i hear a ticking noise only when i open the throttle a little from 1000rpm until around 3500/4000 rpm when the turbo starts spooling. Cold start sounds perfect and when you rev it stationary its fine to. I have driven 1000km and 8000rpm pulls with this and it does not getting worse. I also checked the engine last winter and the rod bearings ware 100%. Only had some wear on the piston skirt but JE Pistons told not to worry about it to much.

Anyone has this experience with a stripped down car? Is it be some kind of induction /air intake noise?

Best noticeable from 0.15 to 0.25 when i give some throttle.

I also thought about the rod bearings but they are new and if its a rod bearing i think the engine would have exploded by now after 1000km en 8000rpm pulls?

To be sure i checked the rod bearings today. As you can see on the photo they have some wear. All the bearings have the same type of wear but i don't really know what to think about it.

The photo with all the 10 bearings are the old ones i replaced after 5000km. The new ones are used for 1000km.

        What do you guys think?

Thre's a little wear on them, but nowhere near enough to make the noise in your video, IMO.

Thanks Andy. I will check the main bearings to this week. Maybe its piston slap er something? I will dismantel the engine this winter to look at the pistons. I have one drag weekend and dyno day this month so will see.

For me this is a lot of wear for 5k km unless this is a track day car and always is driven on max. I saying this since I have seen my bearings around same range they were like new. I was driving only with Motul 20w60 or 15w50 LeMans series maybe the oil really makes difference!

Did you check the oil clearance on them with plasti gauge? Oil pressure ok?

normaly if it's a rodbearing noise you can here it also on revs without driving and i agree with nikolas, this is a lot of wear for 5k km so maybe you have a oil problem

I have almost the same noise in my car. Hard to tell exactly from the video but.
I just assumed that mine came from the very hard enginemounts and havent done anything about it. I also checked my bearings last winter and the seemed fine.

2 months ago though the bearings collapsed due to oilpump pumping air during heavy acceleration so I have now refurbed the engine all over again with new o.d bearings and the crankshaft is polished and I still have this noise.
So now I dont care about it, I believe that its because the hard enginemounts.

I use Millers NANODRIVE CFS 10w-50 oil. But i noted my oil has a slight E85 smell. I pressure tested my car with the intake cam removed and noticed a leak above 2 bar on the valve stem seals. So maybe its bad oil?

Yes i checked the clearance with plastigauge and its fine and the oil pressure to.

Hy, Did you also checked your pistons? You also use JE pistons right? How long do you have this now?

I also have hard engine and trans-mounts.

If it performs good on the dyno i think i will just drive and see.

                        I might have..

The same typ of noise that you have. I Also use harder enginemounts and 034 "track density" tranny mounts. Also i have JE-pistons. Otherwise my engine is doing fine, god oil pressure and smoth runing, exept the noise at low revs. I also dismantled my engine because i was worried but everything was fine. The only thing i saw was little "wear" on the piston skirt on the pistons. Do you guys have pictures on you pistons when they had run for some time?
These are the engine mounts i have:

I have the same noise in my 4k quattro with 2.2t. I run 034 Motorsport spec mounts on engine and tranny so it is quite harsh. I have the dash pulled now as I am going through the electrics in the car and I've also removed the insulation as it was torn in alot of places anyway and I won't mind the noise. I'll just have to wait and see how I feel about the noise later on.

I made the clip while having problems with a bad tappet, http://youtu.be/wTRIAPPRIy4?list=UUc...dnCXra2Wp8-aag

                            Hi!
Yes I have JE pistons and they have a little wear on the skirts but nothing I reacted to really. Ive driven maybe 3000km with this now.

Need to add that I also run JE pistons in my car. I can't recall though that any piston wear bothered me when I had the engine open.
