Thanks Josh Heaps of info on there but it doesn't seem to cover the ABY S2 .... unless I'm really really stupid! Is there a European version of the VAG COM software
Cheers

For further info, have a look at Paul's site (s2central.net).
I bought the older ISO-COM cable and the 2x2 adapter ($50) from Ross Tech, along with a license for VAG-COM, and the software happily reads all ECU blocks, and reads and clears fault codes. The 2x2 adapter is required to connect the newer 15 pin connector to the older VAG models. Look further through Roos Tech's site for more detail.
The VAG diagnostic protocol is international, not in anyway European or non-European
Ross Tech took about 5 days to ship it to me via DHL (the only physical items were the cable)

What exactly is required to hook the ECU up to a PC or Laptop to use VAG-COM? Is it just the software package and that $50 cable? or is there more to it than that?
Thanks

Uwe (ross) didn't know that VAG-COM supported the S2 when I bought it - I think I was the first to try it AFAIK - I told him and sent him the customised .LBL files that populate the data labels on some of the screens for engine OBD.
If you don't get the ABY ECU label files with your VAG-COM download, then you can download them directly from S2central.net. They are buried somewhere in the Technical chapter.

Now that I've got 2 VAG cars & have switched to a laptop at work I'm thinking of investing in VAG-COM. I guess my '98 Passat has an OBD-II port so I wouldn't need an interface cable for that ?
I just got a free Version of VAG-COM, an interface from Ebay, and I got connections to the ABS and the HVAC with the default settings.
But I don't get a connection to the ECU, I allready tried all Baud rates !? Maybe it's the interface :-(
I think many of the OBD interfaces will not work with an S2. I bought one from OBDTOOL which didn't work, although it did on a 96 Transporter.
It is something to do with L-Line initialisation used in early OBD protocol, but I've no clue if it's possible to modify the interface. I'd recommend buying one from ross-tech that many people have used success with.
