    motronic ecu mapping/conversion

Aan engine in a porsche 944. Would like to run on standalone but just looking at differences in cost and if motronic could do the job for what I require.

Must it be an aan ecu or could you use an ecu from other 2.2 20v t engines?

Can maf be deleted and run map instead or another option?

Easy enough to wire into porsche 944 loom? These run motronic anyway?

Turbo is a hybrid gt2871r kkk built by aet turbos. Probably be looking to have the car mapped to 400ish as still on std rods. Turbo is capable of 450bhp.

What sort of costs involved to buy motronic ecu and have it mapped to suit this setup

    many thanks

You can use ECU from AAN, ABY or ADU motors - the ADU variant presents little less work for a tuner, but they are harder to find and more expensive for sure cos of the 'RS' software inside - lol.

If you want to run without MAF on any of the above, then you are into custom mapping work for Motronic by 'prj' on this forum - bit of a legend / rainman type character in these parts. You would need to contact him for a guide on pricing for such work. You could run with MAF and achieve 400bhp but you are looking at custom tune - the 2871R should be good for that.

I can walk you through every wire on the Motronic ECU and engine loom, but would need hands on the Porsche schematics if you needed a wire-by-wire guide to the conversion - depends on how savvy you are in the electrical department.

Oh meant to say that a suitable donor ECU is going to set you back around GBP200-300 I should expect. I might have a spare development ECU collecting dust in a box - would need to check, but they come up for sale on here (and eBay) occasionally.

Cool thanks for that info. I have seen prj on tje forum and seen he is highly regarded when tuning these ecu.

Would like to delete the maf if possible as it keeps space in engine bay and easier pipework etc and cleaner inlet with filter straight on inlet for turbo etc.

Im terrible at wiring so some help would be needed for that side of things. I do have some clued up friends etc though so any info/guides u can supply should be able to work from that.

Which injectors would I require. I will also need an engine loom as I think engine is bare atm with no wiring.

        Cheers

Take guidance from PRJ on injectors - he probably has a preference for your target.

I would be delighted to help guide on the wiring, but I need the schematics from Porsche 944 to clearly identify everything... are you running some aftermarket instruments or grafting in Audi 5-cyl tacho etc - that will be the only tricky thing to adapt into Porsche tacho - unless PRJ can modify the RPM output from Motronic ECU to scale correctly... I actually dunno if that is s/w controlled or a pure h/w function inside the ECU.

Also for donor ECUs - don't be concerned if they are from automatic versions of AAN - that is irrelevant !

This link will get you started on understanding what the 55-pins of the Motronic ECU are doing and how they connect to the 20VT engine and integrate with the vehicle. I have guided numerous folks around the globe on 20VT transplants but not into a Porsche - the 944 is secretly my favourite Porsche anyway so it would be cool to help if I can !

Also - AAN wiring is functionally identical to ABY and ADU but the layout is slightly different on the cabin side of things - I have never had time to write that all up...

That's great cheers. So if I got you the wiring diagram for the 944 you should be able to take a look?

Getting the std dials to work would be cool but not the end of the world if I had to use an aftermarket item.

Tbh atm just balencing up the costs of standalone against remapped stock ecu.

                Cheers again

So - a quick look shows that of the total of 55-pins on the ECU, all but 10 of them connect to anything other than the engine sensors and actuators on the 20VT engine loom.

                  Of those 10 pins -
4 are 0V ground connections on the inlet manifold
                  3 are 12V supply connections
                  1 is for RPM (tacho)
1 is for fuel pump relay control
1 is for after-run pump control

3 other pins are used for OBD
1 other pin can be used for a launch control option from PRJ

Its actually pretty easy if you know what you are looking at !

Standalone will be more expensive in my view as you will need support for the 20VT application - VEMS, MOTEC and a couple of other ones - if you can map the standalone yourself it may be cheaper in the long term if doing lots of tweaks etc but I'd say factory loom and ECU will give you much less hassles for integration etc... you could even run factory chips and injectors to get you street legal before mapping sessions etc with custom code for speed-density and big injectors.

Just having a browse and found this dme diagram for the 944. Uses same 55 pin plug I think? They do have motronic as std so hopefully that makes it easier?

That doesn't help at all... the fact that similar aged 944S2 uses 55-pin Motronic plug as Audi S2 is just Bosch using some common connectors. It hopefully means there is nice factory location inside the car to take Motronic ECU but that rather depends on how useful that is with regards orientation of wiring tail on the 20VT loom.

Maybe the best thing I can do is markup the AAN/ABY/ADU loom for you so it can be easily integrated on the Porsche - I was really looking for Porsche diagram that shows were things like switched, unswitched feeds are, the instrument wire colours and fuel pump relay position... but maybe is easier that I connectorize the vehicle side of the 20VT loom with labels and a simple document explaining how to graft into the Porsche where you friends will have knowledge on that side.

Oh thats a shame lol. Sorry was first diagram I came across. A labelled loom and document would be great. Unless I can find you the diagrams you require for the 944. Its a 1988 s2 if you r able to find what your looking for at all. There r plenty of diagrams to see as google images if u search. Im on my phone so cant see the details well enough to identify them.
