    Mfts What's It's Function

Just fitted a new Mfts sensor as the red water warning light has started flashing intermitantly, the temp gauge is now going past the 90 deg mark even when you are driving along, it normally sits just under the 90 when driving but the red warning light is also coming on and the fan is kicking in and staying on while driving and when i got home it took 20 min to cut off. I didn't have the temp reading problem with the old switch just the red warning light.

Would an air lock cause the temp rise? when i changed the Mfts i lost a pint of water but just replaced it and went to work, does the Mfts monitior the temp or is there another coolant switch that needs changing?

MTFS feeds the temp gauge and also provides an over temp cut-off signal to the ECU, and a overtemp warning on the autocheck. It has nothing to do with the rad fan which is controlled by the temperature switch in the bottom of the rad and the after-run switch next to the MFTS in the water rail.
If you have fitted a crappy Meyle MFTS like I have it reads about two notches past 90 when the car is up to temp. If you are lucky like me it also triggers the over-temp warning constantly. I have a new "new" one on the way from ebay.de

Does sound like you need to bleed some air out.

Your red warning on the dash could also be coming from the coolant level switch in the expansion tank - this switch is essentially wired in parallel with the high temp alarm on MFTS so that either condition gives the water alarm on autocheck. Would be wise to check integrity of the coolant level switch - have seen a few with bad connections etc or just the switch itself (embedded in tank) misbehaving.

I have this ATM.. unplugged the MFTS and still get the red warning on autocheck.. will investigate the level switch as the level itself in the tank is fine.
        Thanks for the tip.

Yes the switch pulls to earth so you can unplug it to stop a false warning

I had this problem on my aby. I replaced the mfts with a genuine one from Quattro Corner. He has a load in recently and was selling them for £50 which is under half price. I also found that at the end of the same wiring loom just further along from the mfts plug the two wires on the temp sender were corroded on the spade connectors as they are at the from bottoms of the engine and seem to be prone to collecting water. Clean them up tool as they were causing mine to ground.

All the research I did shows tha anything but genuine is a waste as they don't read and play up

That 2-pin sensor near the MFTS is of course the thermoswitch for after-run control.
