    7A cam cover sealing.

Will be refitting my cam cover to my 7A engined coupe tomorrow, can someone tell me if I should be using any type of sealer as well as a new rubber gasket??
I'm not a fan of sealer as worried about the stuff getting inside the engine, I was thinking about a very small smear at the camshaft cap......and that is all.
Anyone know if there's a specific sealer used by Audi for this......or does the gasket go on "dry"??

    Thanks in advance,
    John.

When fitting any new rubber gasket I always put a very thin smear of grease on them to help seal. I wouldn't personally use any type of sealant.

Grease, fair enough. I'm thinking because it's rubber it shouldn't really need any other silicon help to make it work?

A wee bit grease it is then.

........unless anyone else can put a word in for the "silicon slime"!!??

No sealer, personally I wouldn't use grease either, as it would just make it slither out of position as you tighten it down.

Just to clear up what I mean by grease. I would put a load on I mean literally enought to make the seal face look like it has a slight gloss I don't mean plaster it on.

I suppose it's just down to my habit, just the rubber seal on its own would work just as well I'm sure.

my old boss always told us to put them on dry, as the chap said above, they can squeeze out like jam from a sandwich when the rocker cover is tightened down . ..

Well it's on and the inlet manifold's in place but still other bits to attach........
.......and fit water pump, idler pulley, etc.......basically just refit the front end.

I didn't use any silicone sealer or grease when putting the engine together. Just a smear of oil on the axle seal rings inner lips, but nothing on the gaskets. No problems since.

I used a tiny, tiny bead of RTV silicon both sides of the rubber and for the first time ever my camcover is leak free. Been good for 6 months

I had to use some silicon on my cam cover near the cams to make it seal on my stroker build...
