dumpvalve, yes or no ?

i wrestle for a while with the thought to remove my dumpvalve(and close the gap) to get a turbo flutter sound like this

i have bin on a dyno this week and ask my tuner off it kils the turbo if i remove my dv.
he told me that he make many turbo engines without dv and with the turbo's you can buy today you make no damage at all and also gives a better response after gearshifting
so,what do you think guy's?
Who has experience with this?
someone broke a turbo with removing the dv?

I think you kill ball bearing turbos very quick without dv. if i would try it then with a journal bearing turbo with billet wheel.


i know that KKK/BW Turbos from TTE (www.theturboengineers.de) with polygonshaft can handle such setup's without problems.

thats a K27 from TTE with ORIGINAL Audi 90 IMSA GTO compressor wheel. it works in a S2 Avant with around 800HP without dv and S1 flutter Sound. but this turbo is a absolutely unique piece

but,it's a hobbycar,not for daily driving so i drive not that many miles(5000 km-year)

i tried my old K24 7000 without DV ,holes blocked,and the noise was ( saving the distances ) like the S1 Rally car

no more than 20 kms , was testing for boost leaks

There is a reason these are fitted…

They prolong turbo life and improve re-spool.
Gear-change re-spool is horrible without a bypass or blowoff valve, as the turbo literally stops and goes backwards, so there is no remaining velocity on the shaft.

Best compromise if you must have that sound is an adjustable valve like the HKR SSQV that does not open until say 0.5bar. So you get the flutter sound at low boost gearshift and proper bypass function at high boost.
Competition cars only run without if the regulations don't allow it, that is the only reason.

a guy i know took the DV off of his 200sx drift car because he thought it was annoying. about 6 weeks later he had to change the turbo as there was so much in-out shaft play the compressor wheel was rubbing on the housing.

Not surprising - I am sure I read somewhere that when Audi ran the GpB rally cars without DVs (making all those fantastic noises that nobody had heard before) - they only got away with it because the turbos were rebuilt or trashed after every rally... it is kind of hard to believe they didn't cop onto the advantages of a DV/BOV much sooner but thats hindsight for you ;-)

i've seen some videos of hks dv on you tube but almost none with a little flutter sound

That flutter sound will destroy the turbo.
Every time you hear that sound you're tearing apart the bearings.
