Have you purchased the headset and bolts yet? I've got both that went unused when I last took my Avant in for a few jobs. My machanic forgot that I asked to do the headgasket and just used the cam cover seal from the headset. I would have thought that having the head bolts would have prompted them to at least ask and confirm. Also my fault for not reminding them what I had asked them to do a week and a half before bringing the car in
We use the Victor Reinz unit because it is the only Inline-5 20V head gasket that is constructed of steel multi layers (with compression gaskets). The downside to the Reinz unit is that the max bore is 82.2mm. That limits people w/ AAN/ADU etc to only use an 82mm max bore piston. If you want 82.5mm or 83mm you have to go with the fibre (garbage) gasket from the 7A which leaves an absolute mess upon removal.
I have spoken to cometic about making a gasket but the supply/demand is simply not there.
To answer your question:
Victor Reinz Head gasket = a good unit.
I have had Reinz and Elring on 20VT.Boths are holding great on 400ish.
the HG itself looks identical with multi steel layers.the early HG of 20VT is made
of paper/fibre based which has known to be common failure on motor with
power upgraded or quite normal for 20years motor.I have a fresh low miles
aan motor from UrS4 with early version HG.the coolant was seeping once
boosting upper stock level.once pulled of the head i found 3 of 5 leaking
the compression on each fire rings on HG.FYI.
I have used both victor reinz and elring head gaskets recently . Didn't see much difference between the two . I enquierd at my local audi dealer about a genuine head gasket and was told they no longer stock it and is no longer available .so dosent give us much option on head gasket manufactures anymore.
never set your expectations to high that way you are never disapointed
