I originally had ngk plugs in, since putting it back in I put iridium bosch plugs in, I have also swapped these back with the old ones to no avail.. The dizzy cap, rotor and leads are the ones I taken off.. Its only been out the car about a month and was all working fine a month ago..

Maf plug appears to be good, I tried starting it with and with out it.. Wouldn't even fire with out it attached.. Does anyone have a list of electrical connections from the ecu that would be crucial to the engine starting and running? Colour of the plugs and the sensors they go to so I can double check them all..

If the injectors/plugs are being fired out of the engine then they are either not fitted in the correct firing order (unlikely) or being fired at the wrong time in the combustion process (more likely).

will double check the cam and crank timing tomorrow, on the inspection hole for the flywheel on top on the bell housing is it the same as the guide says when the line is just visible on the flywheel that's tdc on cylinder one? I will remove a plug and double check, is the cambelt timing meant to be spot on tdc for pot one?

I'd have thought it's more a ignition timing issue rather than static timing

I understand what your saying, the distributer has never been off the head though and the marks on it are still inline?

Are you certain the firing order is correct? Did you disconnect the leads from the cap?

The critical thing to remember is the timing is set on the compression stroke of No1 cylinder. So as you turn the engine over and hear/feel the air escaping, when it stops the marks on the flywheel and the marks on the cam wheel/cam cover should be close. Keep turning the engine till the flywheel mark is aligned and then check the camshaft. If thats all ok check the dizzy alignment marks by removing the cap and checking that the rotor arm aligns with the mark on the dizzy body. Even though you have not removed anyhing, its unlikely that the marks will still be aligned assuming that you have replaced the head gasket or had any resurfacing work done.
The last variable is as others have mentioned the compression. I take it you have replaced the headbolts and headgasket?

ive had the leads off the cap, but have put them back on in the firing order as in the Haynes manual and in the casting on the head 1,2,4,5,3, when the engine is at tdc on number one, the cam lines up with the timing marks, I removed the dizzy cap the timing marks on the dizzy were in line then used the position of the rotor arm as number one for the ht lead then put them back on in a clockwise direction (direction of rotor rotation) following the firing order as above.. has anyone got a picture of there distributer cap with the leads on and which leads go to which cylinder on theirs?

The leads don't run consecutive in a clockwise direction. I'll try to find 5 minutes tomborrow to get the order

That would be helpful thank you, I have ran them clockwise on the firing order, say if number one is at 8 on clock on the dizzy I have started that as pot one, then 10 O'clock cylinder 2, 1 o'clock cylinder 4, 4 o'clock cylinder 5 then 6 o'clock cylinder 3..
