False economy not to replace it with a new one if its suspect. Not a particularly pleasant job and they are prone to failure as Dave has pointed out in his guides.
Unless the Coupe one has been replaced in its lifetime its over 20 years old!

Agree. I always say, "Sure, you *could* reuse a condom, but why would you?"

Same with used fuel pumps (that said, I keep a good used spare in the boot for emergencies).

                  Umm...one hint: FUEL PUMP.

You don't have to remove the basket to just change the fuel pump, at least in a C4 UrS. Here is a link to my most up-to-date C4 Fuel Pump Testing and Replacement pdf:

(It shoould have enough info to work for B3s and B4s. I know it works for B5s)

Ah I need to fit a 044 pump and I think it uses a different basket. Maybe that's when it gets difficult..

You will need the basket from an Audi 200 to fit an 044 pump.

Or early V8s. They used the 60 mm diameter basket required to fit the 044 fuel pump.

Yep have that and a few pipe fittings that apparently are different too? Just need to get the gearbox back in after the clutch change, change the engine mounts to the softer ones, change the gearbox and diff oil from the cheap crap i used for run in to the expensive synthetic stuff, tidy up the crank case breather separator cyclone system I have put on and then onto fuel pump.....

Check out the Deatschwerks DW300... I have one in my UrS4 and from the stats I've found online flows about the same as an 044. Way quieter (in fact I can't even hear it prime). Cheaper too.
