FCP engineering rods have received positive comments and are what I'll be going for. There are also some that come up on here every now and again. I think Colesy had some for sale a while back at £350 and biturbo was selling some Scats secondhand for £250.

I understand that, but if stock rods can handle RS2 power, then can't justify spending £400, just in case I go mad with the power in future (which is very unlikely).
I'd like to get remaped RS2 ish power in the future, so i get your point about the clutch, which I will possibly be upgrading, but upgrade parts for 600-700hp is quite pointless in my books.

If you think 380 is expensive then price a set of stock oversized pistons. Any engine rebuild deserves new bores as they will most certainly be oval and tapered at your sorta miles.
Even a cheap and dirty build is never truly cheep. What you describe in terms of oil consumption 100% is worn bores. New rings won't fix it. On other engines i have tried honing and rings and it has never been a good long term solution. Once the bores are wore near there max tolerance it's a waste of time and good money not boring the engine.
Personally I don't think you need new bores at 180 000. I will most likely be leaving pistons and rods alone (if I don't see any obvious damage or wear), probably will do new piston rings and rod bearings. Rebuild the head, and upgrade the clutch. New gaskets and sensors all round.

I'd believe it. At 97K my engine had zero wear on the bores, and was getting 12bar on compression test but still rebuilt as I was at it. New rings and cylinders lightly honed, mains, ACL race big ends, crank polished. The head also got rebuilt, new guides and seals etc. skim etc.
The main reason for the build is I found grit in the intercooler, like sand or salt crystals. It ate my turbo and I didnt want to take a chance with the rest of the engine.

Don't get me wrong, if I had finance to do all this, I would go mad with it. But I am a student, and I am on a budget. Want to do a light rebuild, and I am sure that will be good enough for me. If when I take it apart, can see high levels of wear etc. that's a different story, but as I said, don't think it'll be that bad after 180 000. My V6 was on 270 000 and engine was taken apart at 250000 and it didn't require new bores.

Well unfortunately that is no guarantee, my 2.2 10V NA engines were fine even with 300.000+ km. but the three S2 engines I have opened up with less km. were all in need of oversized pistons...

I think it's due to maintenance, types of oils and if service has been done regularly. Judging by the service history, mine's been in good hands, so fingers crossed.
I just want to buy the parts before taking the engine out, so it makes rebuilding quicker.

head gasket kit
bottom end gasket kit
sump gasket
forged rods
exhaust head studs/nuts
ARP headstuds (or use oem stretch bolts)
rod bearings
timing belt
billet pulley
water pump
I re used the original valve guides, just fitted new stem seals, lapped the valves in by hand, stripped/cleaned/new gaskets, cranks seals etc.
Did you already have fresh timing belt parts?
My bores still had hone marks, rod bearings looked perfect. You will not know until you open up and measure the bores.
That's mostly what I want to do.
Timing belt on mine was done at 169 000 I think, checked it when changing crank pulley and it was good. So won't be changing that. I am still thinking about the rods, I guess it depends on how money will be when I take on the build.
Would stock AAN rods handle mapped RS2 power?
And how much does usually RS2 turbo, exhaust mani and injectors go for? (that's all I need to get RS2 spec?)
