    lambda probe

    hi guys

I know this question must have been asked a million times before, but

where's the best place to buy a S2 std lambda probe from, what's the part no. & roughly how much?

my S2 has a (un)healthy thirst at the moment & I'm planning on changing the lambda probe & cleaning the MAF.

    thanks very much.

You can get them from VAG parts or stealer. The one with the longer lead is cheaper for some reason though

        034 906 265C or Bosch 0 258 003 957 for the part numbers.

A Bosch agent may be cheaper.

How bad is your fuel consumption? I get about 18 mpg running the 5 miles to work and back but on a long run being as gentle as possible on the throttle I can get about 24 mpg ish. I sometimes set my fuel computer to instantaneous fuel consumption and it's scary how often it drops down to 5 with even gentle-ish acceleration.

Although I came into this S2 ownership thing with my eyes open last October I need to try to improve things a bit so I'm off to get some IPA this morning to clean the MAF and I'll give the K&N air filter a wash out as well. If this doesn't improve things much I'll be looking at doing the lambda sensor as it looks as if mine is original.

that's pretty much how mine's performing. I mainly drive short (about 6 mile) distances with the odd 20-mile run. My average since start of ownership in September is 18.5mpg. It must be said, I don't tend to drive gently and wind it up whenever I can - you've got to make use of the power now and then !!

I've been reading the threads on this forum & RS246 and it seems that 22mpg is a reasonable average, with a long distance cruise returning up to 30 mpg.

It also seems that several sensors don't have a finite life & should almost be replaced as a service item. e.g. lambda, DV, MAF, WGFV...........

I'm determined to get my car performing how it should, but I've been spending money like its going out of fashion ever since I bought the car. Mine is a 1995 model avant, 2 owner, 80k & full dealer (& expensive) history. I somehow didn't think the car would be so far from perfect - or is it my enthusiasm ??!!#

good to talk & share similar experiences.

I too have just ordered some IPA & have the pressure test kit & IC mod ready for my time...........

Cleaned out the MAF yesterday and although it's early days things are looking good. On the run down to work last night (gentle downhill all the way but plenty of roundabouts & traffic lights) I managed to get 28mpg which I have never seen before. Coming back up the hill including standing with the engine running for five minutes while I scraped the ice off the windows the average dropped to 23.5 mpg. I'll wait till I've done a full tank worth of Optimax before I start celebrating but if I can increase my fuel comsumption by about 3 or 4 mpg (22 around town & 28 on a run) I'll be well chuffed. Probably still look at doing the lambda sensor though as it's more than likely done 130,000 miles.

I've had my avant since October and so far I've spent £2000 on it although not all of that was absolutely necessary. £300 was for replacing the perfectly good alarm/immobiliser with a Thatcham approved one for the benefit of the insurance company and £400 was for a chip upgrade. The necessary money went on four tyres, a battery, load cover, oil cooler, main radiator, thermostat, gear lever assembly, gear nob and two coils. I still need to change all the brake discs and pads (possibly including a Porsche upgrade on the front), change the wishbone bushes/top mounts/balljoints and think about my options for replacing the leaky front strut inserts. Then of course I'll be needing front and rear RS2 anti roll bars and a heated black leather interior. As they say in the adverts 'Once you pop you just can't stop'

                just for info, guys

spoke to my local specialist about the cost of lambda probe, fitted. he said "why do you want a new one?" and offered to test the system. He did an MOT style emissions test & a test on the output voltage & everything was within limits !

well, that's saved me over 100 quid (fitted) - but what about the poor consumption ??

this weekend I did the boost leak pressure test, found the infamous knackered I/C Oring, fitted the I/C mod kit, cleaned the MAF, TPS & ISV with IPA. (sorry about the anacronyms, but have been reading about these for months & only just getting round to doing them all).

will watch fuel consumption over the next few weeks.............
