Just bought an S2 - Temperature question

    Hi,

I've read a few threads with people experiencing low coolant temperature when on the open road (60 deg). I have just bought an S2 and mine does the same. What I am unsure of is are all of our thermostats opening too quickly and should we be using a different one to keep the temp at 90 all the time? A few people seemed to have success when changing theirs. Is this true? Which thermostat works best?

Another little quirk is that a red (brake i think) warning stop light comes on for a few seconds sometimes after starting. Do you think there is a pressure problem?

    Thanks for the help

    Robin

The most common reason for the low temp is that the rubber seals on the termostat are worn. Buy a new original (audi) termostat, it is cheap.

      to the forum

Yup, a new stat will cure the problem. Do it sooner rather than later, cause you'll be throwing fuel away each time you drive it, when the coolant temp is low. A cheap part but not the nicest of jobs to do...

The brake warning light is pretty common too. Try a change of the hydraulic fluid first, that may improve the situation. Only use the recommended fluid (G002000) Have a look on www.S2central.net for info on testing the bomb.

I had this on my urs4, changed the thermostat, flushed the system and mpg went up by between 8-10mpg.

i've had the brake warning come on also (just bought hte car) and after hyd. fluid change to the audi goo2000 the warning is completely gone, nice :-)

My old fluid was very dark in colour and thicker than the new one. i wonder how old it was

            Thanks for that guys,
            I'll change the thermostat.
I've noticed that the brakes go hard immediately after stopping the enigine (not even 1 pump, let alone 30). Reading the stuff on the bomb, I think that I have a problem there. Sounds expensive...
            Cheers

Changing the 'stat may or may not change the temp reading. I know people who have change their's and it hasn't made any difference. It could just be the multifunction sensor being affected by airflow - see here.

any pictures of where this sensor is located?

AFAIK it's on the water rail by the inlet manifold. Could be wrong though. Anybody made a shield for the multi-function temp sensor & got any pic's ?
