I've had a few instances of rich-smelling, slightly blue, smoke out the exhaust on start up recently. It's getting harder to tell now that the weather is getting colder and a few minutes of condensation can be expected first thing in the morning.
When I finished sh*tting myself the first time it happened I searched for the symptoms on here and concluded the most likely reason is the turbo leaking oil. That's no real disaster as I have had a spare sitting around since I bought the car.
Finally had some free time during daylight hours this morning to take the inlet pipe off ahead of the throttle body to check for oilyness. Not sure what to make of what I found - it was oily, but should it be completely clean in there under normal circumstances? Should I give it a proper clean rather than just a wipe down to check again in a few days?
When I put it all back together I decided to start the engine as it had been sitting for longer than it does during the week - not so much smoke out the exhaust, probably a lot of condensation but again hard to tell exactly, although it definitely wasn't rich with burnt oil. But there was smoke coming from inside the engine bay (bonnet still up at this point) around the downpipe/wastegate area. This burnt off after about 30-90 seconds-ish. Is this telling of turbo issues?
I also had to top the oil up for the first time since buying the car 18 months ago so would a leaky turbo explain this? I'm assuming that is where the turbo gets its lubricant from...
I'm hoping this is all down to the turbo as I have a spare and not something else more serious and expensive!
I'll appreciate any guidance chaps
