    engine rumble

    Hi all,

Got a new problem again , when does it stop .

On saterday I fixed my exhaust, replaced the mounting rubbers and sealed a leak. Fixed my windscreen washer pump and replaced one of the headlight glasses, because it was broken. Now I have a really anoying, pretty loud, engine rumble coming from behind the cambelt cover . It is only when the car idles and I rev it up quickly, when I drive the car is running smooth and you cant hear a rumble. I think it must be the guidening role, waterpump or maybe, but I dont think/hope, the cambelt pulley. I dont think the belt it touching the cover, I dont felt any vibrations.

I replaced the waterpump, cambelt and the guidening role 16000km back.

Can someone tell me what is the minimum I have to take off to get the cambelt cover off.

    thanks,

    Erik

I found this on the internet, but I dont really know what they mean with it. There anrent any pictures attached.

    Distributor Rattle
    (Bob D'Amato)
Symptoms: Engine makes a strange rattle noise when you blip the throttle, heard most predominantly when the rpms fall from +- 2000 rpm back down to idle.
    Distributor #: 034 905 205J from 90-91 Coupe Quattro and 90-91 90 Quattro 20V.
Mark the general direction the rotor is pointing. Timing is done by the computer, so you don't have to be too exact.
Remove distributor. You first need to remove the hold-down bracket. You can't really see it, but it's there. The bracket is secured by a 13mm bolt, which may be covered by an anti-tamper cover. You will need a box wrench, preferably a ratchet box wrench, because there is very little room to swing the wrench.
Hold shaft by cam gear and move parallel to shaft (end play). This is your noise.
Drive out Clevis pin holding on cam gear CAREFULLY. Cam gear is plastic and breaks easily. (Experience talking here...)
Add high quality washer/spacers between the cam gear and the body of the distributor, until there is no more play. The spacers should be stainless steel with an inside diameter of 12.7mm (.5"). The thickness may vary by the amount of runout.
Put cam gear back on, drive in Clevis pin.
    Put distributor back in car.
NOTES: Use very thin stainless washers to get the right spacing. You don't want it too tight, the distributor must turn freely.

Did someone experienced this problem, mine does also make the rattling noise when i give throttle from idle and when it is falling form 2000 rpm to idle. You can only hear the sounds when the car is hot, it sounds normal when it is cold.

    thanks,

    Erik

I am going to change the waterpump, cambelt, tension role again. I think I will also be wise to change the cam seal and the crank seal. Last time I didn’t changed it. Do I need some special tools to get the seals out of the housing. Or are there also alternative ways to get them out.

Cam and crank seal are easy to get out - they look similar so don't get them mixed up! Use a couple of small screws, screwed into the crank seal - then just pull it out.

            aha thanks doug.

So the only tool you really need is the tool to get the big crank bolt off, is it wise to buy this one new?

I made a crank tool. But if you can get the proper one, for sensible money, just buy it.

I can't think of any other special tools required - I did use a 1" drive socket and extender bar for the crank bolt.

I made a small recorded the sound which is not supose to be there. Does this sound like the waterpump.

the quality isnt good, but I mean the bird like sound which you can hear.

                  sounds track

                  Thanks,

                    Hi All,

Ordered all the parts which I need to do replace the cambelt again. I also ordered a new cam pulley, the seals and a crankshaft bold.

Can the campulley easily be taken off, or do you need a special tool for it?
