There is a tread here started by jamo i think, with rebuilding costs.
2.2t engine type doesn.t matter.
I remember something around 5k gbp for a complete bottom rebuild (rebore , honing, new pistons, new rods, etc)

Measure bores for wear and out of round,measure pistons,ring into piston clearances,ring gaps into bores,main bearing line checked on block with caps torqued ad spec with oe or am bolts.Piston pins,rods.
Crank measured,oil pump drive condition and oil pump itself condition.

Or get the block to an"engine man" and if it is real shop will check/remake/replace all you need for a strong engine.
Choose if you want more power than adu with sw can do,or you will stay stock adu.Choose if you want exotic RPM engine revs.
You need to know what you will use engine for from the start.You will use stock engine with generic sw or other.
If other(drag,street,rally,hillclimb,track etc) you will build engine considering different factors.

Choose wise,it is very important.You can loose lots of money if you do not do it properly from the start.If you choose to be cheap will only look cheap at the beginning.Remember,cheap engine rebuild is not possible.

Basic rebuild about £1500-2000, medium upgrade (what I'm doing), £3000-3500, top spec £5000-10000.

What is considered medium and what is top?

Medium should include pistons(if bores are not round) bores machined and honned.Also rods?
Top...This will get custom pistons depending on the power level needed and powerband used(so not from shelf 700 eur pistons)top rods,crank assembly balanced,crank main caps with gridle(maybe did not wrote ok,it is the plate that gives strength to the main bearing line)?But we were talking about the bottom end,what could get you in tha 10.000 area?Drysump etc?Maybe stroker?On the block face water chanels machined?

All prices included a flywheel and clutch and gave consideration to an engine builder doing most of the work.

Top spec is JP's stroker with the works and all top kit.

If you did a mid-spec with top brands like JE custom pistons and Arrow or Carillo rods, zero balance, billet flywheel etc. you can head towards £5k pretty fast.

Total 100% car rebuilt (all New parts) and improvements (600 hp) = ~ 35k euro
engine was somewhere 15 -17 k euro

Price really depends what you want out of the build. Basic freshen up a stock engine without replacing any major components starting from around £1k... Tell us what you want to achieve

My budget was £3-3.5k building the engine myself and reusing my current head with a basic rebuild but now, with a tickled head, it's now heading towards £5k but that does include someone else doing the work, a spare block, new head, rebore, which I'd hoped to avoid and 2 new engine mounts. The lightened FW, SRE clutch and all other extras were included in the original budget, although I'm going to reuse my RS2 water pump for now... Internal parts are from FCP-Engineering on here and were an excellent price and good quality too.
