    AAN camcover breather relocation.

I'm thinking to relocate the rear breather port on the back of the camcover.
what position of the camcover would be the best place?i'm experiencing the slosh
effect when hard launch in straightline and oil splited out the breather port.
Normally,i didn't track the car so I never accelerated in 90 degree bend curve.
I'm planning to drill it somewhere near the oil filler cap in between the cam lobes with 90 degree AN fittings. Is that a good idea?Do i need to baffle it?

Oh my. I have never heard of that much oil in the upper head that it would "slosh" out the back of the cam cover at the OE vent. Sounds like you have a blocked oil drain passage in the head. There shouldn't be that much oil up there.

You're talking about the vent at the back of the cam cover that I have annotated with pink in this diagram:

yes Dave, the pink arrow direction with 14mm outlet at the back of cam cover.
Rusty(Andy) wrote the head breather investigation thread on the sticky thread.
i exactly have the same issue.on the street if i'm in normal driving mode, there's barely
oil in the catch tank.if i tried beat the hell out on straightline,i started to see some
      oil in there.

i have put an extra ventilation on my AAN valvecover without problems
i have a baffled sump, use open tubes from about +-25mm and a mann provent 200 like you. last time i drove on the track and afterwords i checked the oil in the can but there was only condensation in it.the engine has 520 hp and have totaly no problems with the cranckcase ventilation!

Pop: I am NOT talking about the PCV system. I am talking about a blockage in the oil drain ports that *should* allow the drainage of the oil that has been pumped up to the camshaft journals to drain back to the sump by gravity. I think the ones *IN* your AAN head are clogged, resulting in the unneeded accumulation of oil within the head. This oil is getting hot, resulting in the creation of vapours that you are seeing as "blow-by".

arrhh I got it Dave.I will check the drainage port again but the slosh effect happens on 3 aan heads.i have 4 AAN motors and they all did the same when launched it in straightline.I bet it must be getting worse if i track the car especially on clockwise track.i'm just back home now and opened the Provent 200 and found nothing.I would say the oil splited out only if i really push it hard let's say redline shift, shift down from 5th to 3rd with full throttle.

I've done some research in to this and there is a fair chunk of oil that comes out of that breather pipe, it's been fairly well documented over the years, with people modifying the cam cover to improve the location of the breather pipe.

Somewhere on top of the cam cover, in the middle, is best. If you can get a 19mm / 3/4" pipe in there too, then that's better still.

In conjunction with a swirl pot and catch tank, that's about the best you'll get

Thanks Nick,I guess the the bigger cross section pipe(25 mm VS stock 14mm) will reduce the speed of the air fumes too?

Thanks Andy! Firstly,I'm planning to get the 90 deg Bend pipe on the
top of the cam cover (preferably offset middle to the front section of the cam cover)
but worried about the clearance between the hood is an issue.I might be welding
pipe on the injectors side of cam cover instead.

one more thing i would like to know the height of the breather base filler cap of the VW Beatle 2.0.if the height is not an issue on C4.this would be an easy and perfect
                    fix.

well i found the height of the breather base.it's 2.8" which might be our clearance issue.

Might be worth seeing if you can get a low height cap to go on it.

I think Hank suggested 2 fittings on either side of the No. 3 spark hole.

                          Bufkin's car

I am planning on venting the existing tube to use it as a breather.

Most of the works cars seem to have a top mounted AN fitting.

I dont know if you need a splash shield, I was planning on fitting one if there is space, I would think the cams throw a lot of oil around.

Hank made a custom baffled valve cover by building up the sides, filled with steel wool, baffles and a new top on.

Oil control issues on higher bhp cars with aggressive driving are well documented, even on rebuilt engines (with clean oil drains).

Hard launching vomits oil out the head breather, hard right hand turns launch it out the crank vent. Normal street driving no issue.

Also these will be generally be done at higher RPM which might be at the upper limit of the head drains (IIRC Repo modifies the oil restrictor in high rpm motors as the oil cannot drain from the head fast enough and oil starvation can occur)

Also under acceleration the oil slosh will only be able to drain through the rear drains, compounding the problem.

I can drive my RS2 spec 3B on the road no problems with oil control (I dont launch the car), hard driving on track can throw out over a litre of oil, if I back off a bit, no oil issues.

                              Andy,
BlackS2,Thuppu(Thomas) have done that on stock vent pipe running along under rocker cover.I was thinking to do that too but I still need that pipe to vent the fumes
in front of the turbo.I believe i can add some hose and plumb it back on those turbo inlet but laying the extra vent rubber hose besides the turbo might not be a good idea.First off i will measure the hood clearance if we could fit those breather based on filler cap.if thing is going well,we can eliminate welding job ,removing the rocker cover then.
