    Opinions on 10w60 for 5cyl

    Ok guys,
I have read here on forum nice write up that explains why it is not such great idea to use 10w60 oil in our engines if not used on regular basis on track.

Apparently on German RS forum they all swear in using 10w50 or 10w60 as anything else according to them is junk. They actually threw a fit on me when I ask them why are they all jumping on 10w60 and most of their cars are not even driven but 6 months in year and that on weekends only.

I was wondering what are your opinions.

I use Motul Chrono full synthetic 10w40 in my RS2 since i have the car ( about 4 years now) and have no issues so far.

If your oil pressure is good and you don't use it on track, then 10W40 is fine.

Thicker oil offers more protection with higher oil temperatures, as achieved on track and especially for journal bearing turbos, where the oil temp can be well over 200 degC and so the film thickness drops.

I run 10W60 on my 175k mile engine with the odd track day but will be using 10W40 on my new one, unless I get strong reasons to go 10W50.

That is exactly my opinion, but Germans dont like that .

I cant remeber who wrote here on forum but it was very detailed in theory which made sense.

Basically, it's all about maintaining oil film thickness while minimising the impact of excessive viscosity in cooler parts of the system...

I read some technical info about the 10w60 oil and I remember the 10w60 oil has its best properties at 130-150 degrees celsius.
Will your oil get to that temperature? I don't think so.

I used 10w60 in my old s2 without proper info , because "racing and stuff" "and forums and stuff" and I dont know if it's related to the oil or not ,but now after a days of not starting the engine, when it starts, you can hear some lifters noise.
The noise wasn't present before using 10w60.

I use now BMW Oil, 5W30, because they use it for almost all of their cars, regardless of age of fabrication or type of fuel or engine cm3. The other type of oil they use is 10w60 but only for their M cars.

So if BMW thinks BMW 5w30 oil is good enough for 4.4 biturbo v8, v12, 1.6i, 3.0 biturbo diesel, 3.0 biturbo petrol, etc, and it's good for 30.000 km of use , than it's good enough for my stage 1 S2 for 10-15.000 km

Hugely subjective matter really and depends on what you use your car for and when. I don't use my S2 in the colder months. It is only used in mild-hot weather and although it is not tracked, I do tend to drive it like I stole it, on boost heavily for extended periods. I use 10w50 Fuchs Titan Pro S and hope that the extra viscosity of the oil will help with the higher temps the car sees for the extended periods I drive it for in spring-autumn months. I cannot see there is a perfect answer really as age of engine components, ambient temp, style of driving etc all have a bearing on what you choose. Without having loads of knowledge on the subject, I went with what Oilman and many others go with for modified 20VT's. If I am being honest, I cannot feel much of a difference between when I used 10w40. Possibly it seems a touch smoother when warm. If it is good quality oil and changed regularly, you are half way there.

In Germany we have a saying: What a farmer not knows, he won´t eat.
German guys often are very fixed on what they know from earlier, and kinda unflexible with other meanings. Said to say, but- true :-)

The 10W60 Castrol was the only oil for high performance cars that need oils for high temperature. And since Germans define themselves over their cars and want to show off a little, they need the "best" available oil for their "high performance" (220hp stock) Audi.
And remember- Germany Highways have no speed limit, so it is definetly possible to reach higher oil temperatures than somewhere else.

IMHO, the 10W60 is not the best one. The 60 is too high, still for tuned 20vts, so not necessary; and the 10 makes the oil a bit thick when cold.

I personally prefer the mobil 5W50; Stable enough for still high tuned cars, when not moved on track and with a good oil cooler, but thin when cold and therefore quick inside the turbo after start.

But still good 5W40 oils should be ok, and I heard about the Fuchs silcolene 5W40 is a very good oil for the S2.

More important is the change- change at least 1 time a year, or every 10 000km, that is much better than using a 10W60, but giving a *nothing* on the change times.

I run Lucas Racing 20W50 Mixed with Lucas stabilizator, it can Takes alot of Heat and oil Pressure goes up. I Drive the Car on the Autobahn and at the Nordschleife without Heat Problems. Motul 5W50 is also good.

I changed to castrol 10w 60 and oil pressure naturally went up, I use mine as a daily and have had no issues.

Well I never wantad to say that 10w60 is not good, but like mentioned already here several times, depends what you use your engine for.
However, most these guys in German forum drive their cars so rarely even on street that that in my opinion using aything more that what audi specified ( I am talkin only viscosity and not quality of oil) is just waste of money and that is what i tried to discuss with them.

                      and no problems with this.

The problem in Germany we don`t drive our car every day and when we drive it, we pull very hard on the Autobahn at highspeeds so you need an oil that can take high temperatures and that give you a stabel pressure. No other Nation has more experience with these car has Germany, We tune these cars since 81 and we push it on the Autobahn and Nordschleife very hard and know what work`s or not.

I'm using 5w50 since mine was rebuilt, better economy, better cold performance and no issues with fast driving either. I used to run the 10w60 and it was gold on an old engine but noticed the difference once switched to thinner oil.

I'm using Fuchs Titan 10W50 in my S2 and it's what I recommend to friends and customers alike for cars that are driven hard, it's expensive stuff but you get what you pay for IMO. It has silenced a noisy lifter and the engines runs sweetly with good strong oil pressure, 2 bar on hot idle with the radiator fan on and 4+ bar once over 2000RPM.

I'd have thought a good quality 10W60 is fine, especially for prolonged heavy usage as long as the engine is warmed up properly which one should do with any oil.

I use VAG 10W40 semi synthetic in my Corrado G60 and change it along with the filter every 2K miles (three times a year) as I do a lot of short journeys in the car and have a low annual mileage. I think that makes more than using an expensive fully synthetic and leaving it in for ages.

I dont agree with this. I live in Germany over 3,5 years now and own my RS2 that long as well. In all these years I have met maybe 5 cars on Autobahn that wanted to run fast with me or against me. Rest are driving like my grandparents in cars that cost 10 times then my car.

Again I am not saying that any oil crap ist, i m just saying that i have learned that it is not neccesary to run anything more that 10w40 for regular on the street driving where you every now and then push your car hard.
