3b Alloys on an ABY. Nice find. Good luck getting it up to scratch.

Hmm, wonder why they were swapped? Possibly Audi used those alloys on the early ABYs?

Anyone have any thoughts on the ticking from the engine?

Yea, there was a small crossover period, where the amber indicators, non-ellipsoidal headlights and 3b wheels were sold with aby. Dont think they arrived until 1994.

The ticking could be a stuck tappet or the Power Steering pump. It might be worth a shot to take the ps belt off to see if thats the source of the ticking.

My 93 avant originally had non ellipsoid headlights, amber indicators and 3b alloys and no roof rails.

It now has non ellipsoid headlights, no roof rails, 3b and avus alloys depending on the weather and clear indicators....

That's interesting- I didn't know about early ABYs coming from the factory with 3B stuff ......
(my '95 ABY presently wears 3B alloys too, but I put them there )

Hmm, if it is a stuck tappet then it could be down to running it on the 10yo oil. Is there any harm in putting in some engine flush then replacing with new oil and filter?

Nice....Let it run on the old oil until its warm, drain and add new. That may solve. But get the cambelt done asap!

Yea as above, I wouldn't bother with the flush, just warm up the oil and change it. Tappet might come right itself. Belt and lower timing pulley should be changed asap.
Perished hoses will be a problem, also the short hose by the thermostat are known for going brittle and cracking.

More money than sense doing what you did then asking for advice when you did the exact opposite of what everyone else already advised you to do (I.E. don't start it).

Sidrik, you're right, can't argue. Hopefully an oil change as suggested will recover the situation.

Tbh, the more I read up, I pretty quickly came to the conclusion that I don't have the expertise to do the cam belt change etc myself so at least wanted to be sure that there was nothing fundamental wrong before handing it over to a garage. Bit chicken and egg.

There are about 3 garages in the country I can think of that I would trust to do the job properly. Otherwise a local forum member might help you out. Where are you located?
As already advised by many people DON'T run the engine any more until the cambelt is done. Seriously.
