I have an RS2 turbo that I am going to have rebuilt. I am concerned that I do not know what spec they must rebuild to and if the equipment they have will be able to do the job.
How do you pick a rebuilder?
Any advice or specs to have the rebuilder built to
I would say that for a starting point, you need to find a company who knows the KKK turbos and has rebuilt scores of them. If they answer your question with "What is KKK, the Klu Klux Klan?" Move on. (For more than one reason - run away).
Read this RS2 Turbo Rebuild Info post for part numbers, sources of parts, etc:

Maybe the 360 ones do spool a very little slower due to more friction area compared to the 270´s, there´s no other reason I could find for that. And yet not sure if that is true... never heard something negative like that.
360° is just for reliability, not for performance. Makes sense especially on high boost levels.
I agree it seems like the bearing change is for just reliability. I can find nor think of any reason for not going the 360° route.
Anybody have specs on balancing? What is possible with a good machine? Low or high RPM balancing.
CHRA balancing, high speed (VSR) and low speed (balancing machine). The VSR (vibration sort rig) is a machine that uses compressed air to spin the assembled CHRA to a relatively high speed.
Anybody have specs / thoughts on balancing?
Also the clearance of the vanes on the turbine and compressor housing?
The float on the shaft? Can it be changes what should it be? Should it be less than or greater than OEM?
RS2 turbos are not cheap to rebuild. I believe they replace the hole core.
I had mine rebuilt by CR turbos . They picked it up,and delivered it when finished.
That was over two years ago. Still going strong.
I live in South Africa and there is a wide range of turbo rebuilders and picking one that can do the work correctly will need some knowledge of what to look for.
I have also posted on the Audi forum SA web site for others to advise.
Anybody can repair these turbo but not everybody can do it right.
I have two RS2 turbo one is rebuilt and the other is the one I am going to have rebuilt and use on my car.
The first one I purchased was rebuilt and it is not fully original it has a #6 turbine housing and different turbine wheel and shaft with some small differances, so I decided to get an original unit and have it rebuilt.
It looks like there are very few things wrong with it seals, bearings, thrust washers and a good man and his balancing machine should be all it needs.
The main thing is it must be 1,000,000% right, better than new if that possible!
Hence I need to make sure its done right the first time.
I have used TURBO EXCHANGE in Johannesburg twice to rebuild my RS2 turbo at every 120,000 KM and are the sole distributors for KKK in South Africa. They have balancing machines and are SABS aproved standards. They have been in business for the last 20 years and belong to the IMPERIAL GROUP which is listed on the JSE and offer a 12 months warranty on parts and labour.
