    ABY clutch master cylinder linkage

Could someone explain to me the purpose of the clutch master cylinder push rod with the special rubber damper that seems to fail on our cars.

I'm just in the process of fixing mine because its buckled and the pedal doesn't return fully home, this may or may not be related to the failing part.

I noticed its a specific part to the aby so I'm considering removing the part altogether and using a 3b push rod.

    Many thanks.

Don't know the purpose of the rubber donut other than being a revenue generator for Audi when they fail. I went through the same exercise as you last year so you must bear in mind that the diameter of the ABY/3B pushrods are different, so you'll need a new clevis for behind the pedal too. I got all the bits needed as a kit from Quattro corner. I also added a locknut to secure the clevis to the pushrod

got an audi one and it was fine.

funny as it is the 16v one was identical to aby. from a 1991 car. not sure why

Interesting that non aby cars are working fine without it so what's different on the aby pedal box, I have a 3b pedal box in the shed so ill dig it out and maybe put the whole lot ( pedal, push to and cylinder) on.

The ABY clevis is a different size. You can use a 7A/3B slave & clevis which are bullet proof, or Rusty does a nice little kit to strengthen the weak ABY item

its the same as the 16v?

why would the 16v have the bigger type then they skip it til aby? over engineering early parts maybe?

I designed a brace that sorts it all out. The ABY ones fail due to a manufacturing error IMO. The 5 speed uses the same design but seems to never fail where the 6 speed ones do. Mine lasted about 25k miles before starting to go again, which is utterly disgusting at £150 over £50 for a normal one.

I got three years out of a brand new master cyl before the rubber started to fail, fixed it with one of your kits so its spot on now. Thanks Andy!
