It is possible to remove them without taking the engine out, but I would advise against it, it's quicker to take the engine out.

Alternative is gearbox off and then go in from the rear. But again, it's easier to drop engine and box down together, change them, and then put it back in.

Don't forget to use a pressure tool T-d into both actuators and verify that both actuators open and close at exactly same time on the turbos, as otherwise you might be pulling the engine again soon.

Anything 2.7tt and especially the *K*03 turbos (time to go *K*04s is now BTW) is:

      1. Step 1 - remove engine from chassis.

        It's K03, not T03. Big difference.
        Also, the step is:

        1. Remove engine from chassis or remove gearbox from chassis (or both). Or alternatively they can be changed in-situ, but it is so hard to get to certain bits and bolts, that it's not worth the effort. Better to drop the engine down somewhat together with the box.

That is funny. I typed K03 and K04 but for some reason, thought that was wrong and changed K to T.

          Anyway...

          Step 1. - sell 2.7tt-equipped vehicle
Step 2. - buy AAN/ABY/ADU equipped vehicle where you can actually see and replace things.

Step 3 - enjoy complete loss of handling properties of the car.
2.7TT is much nicer to drive than the 2.2T, and it's not just due to the increased displacement. Try an actual RS4 sometime Dave.

                  P.S.
I recommend dropping the gearbox and the engine out together, it's a huge PITA to get the engine onto the gearbox when you are putting it back in if you don't. BTDT.
If you need to work on the trans anyway, you can take just the trans out and access the turbos from the back. It's not pleasant, but completely doable.

somewhere on audizine there's a link to a video that shows engine+tranny removal step by step.
I agree about S4 handling. Very funny, the car seems normal A6 C4 chassis with 2.2T.

That would be tricky since we didn't get any over here.

Anyway, I like the C4 just fine and don't like multi multi link front dog bone suspensions.

They wear out and there are too many of them and they aren't inexpensive (for good ones). Yes, I understand the C5/B5 suspension is "better" but sometimes, simple is better than complicated.
