Would something like this help? S2 temp sender is going to be the same, even if the gauge looks different.

Bentley doesn't have much - just how to test at the three marked temperatures (60, 130, 170 C) using a VAG tool.

From the internet we get this:

                  1. Cold engine oil causes excessive frictional drag on the bearings and cylinder walls. (So don't give engine the beans until you are well over the 60C mark at least)

                  2. Engine oil needs to be at least 220 degrees F (104 C) to burn off all the deposits and accumulated water vapor.

                  3. A quality conventional motor oil will tolerate oil sump temperatures of up to 250 degrees F (120 C) but starts breaking down over 275 degrees F (135 C)

                  4. The "traditional approach" is to try to hold oil temperatures between 230 and 260 degrees (110 C and 127 C)

Sounds about right to me. I just checked a 1994 Audi 100 Owner's Manual and it mentions a "normal zone" on the gauge but fails to actually tell the owner what it is. 60 C is too cold to "accelerate under full load".

It also says "If the need moves to the upper zone (but it doesn't tell us what that is, but you could guess it is above 130 C) in exception cases, the engine speed must be reduced. The needle should then return to the normal zone" (again, undefined)

Found this: Looks like a Volvo style gauge and it reinforces 130 as the upper range of okay and above 130 as too hot.

Can somebody post a good sharp photo of an S2 or RS2 oil temperature gauge?
