As per title i am in the process of renewing the crank oil seal i have just bought the locking tool from audi and appears to be in the wrong position anyone have a picture of the said tool in place on the crank pulley here is the one i have when i changed the belts a few months ago using Kit's home made one it did not look like this. All the timing marks are ok.
It's been a while since I've done this on mine but am I right in saying that the crank locking tool doesn't actually lock the engine at TDC !?
You need to use it to loosen the bolt, then rotate to TDC before complete removal of the belt or crank pulley. Then do the opposite before tightening up again.
PITA I know!!
'93 S4 Avant now back on the road complete with new shiny go faster bits.
Hi I am a time served mechanic I agree with Merlin the tool is only I repeat only to lock the crank so you can unlock the crank bolt you then turn it to TDC and mark that position .

You are correct. Good catch. Point 15 in this illustrated AAN timing belt DIY pdf by Fred M. in Canada:
Thanks for the advice lads, because id used Kit's home made tool which locks the crank at Tdc it threw me a bit and after paying ÂŁ90 for the tool i thought it was a bit odd knowing that Audi wouldn't make a tool that did not work.
Just for reference worth noting that the 3B 2084 tool does lock it at TDC. God knows why the 3256 doesn't. I modified my 2084 tool to work on the ABY, just needs the ring extending to engage with the pulley tooth
Also found that the bolt supplied is to short i used the long bolt plus a couple of nuts and washers from the bottom of the snub mount brkt that holds the A/c compressor to the brkt. worked a treat.
