    ABY toothed belt NLA

    Hi all,

As we all know the ABY toothed belt is NLA!

    Options:

    Audi tradition 054 109 119 H - 55€ + shipping

    Gates - 10€

    Continental - 25€

    What do you think?

I´ve changed the water pump the last time I´ve changed the belt 80000Km ago and 5 years my car as always had the correct Audi fluids and no rust at all!

Should I use the same pump with a new o-ring or put a new water pump?

Thank you in advance for the replies!

    AAN/ABY Cam Timing Belt Alternatives

OE (if available - rumoured to be NLA):

AAN and ABY = 054109119H 151 tooth timing belt. (151 Z in Katespeak)
    NM,7A and 3B = 054109119G "toothed belt" 147 teeth (not 151 for the 3B)
    RS2 = 034109119C = 150 teeth according to the photo (not 148 as I once thought)

    After Market:

Gates PowerGrip 5269XS (151 tooth x 19 mm wide) (presumably the same as the OE product, just in a different package):

Thanks to "TyloPuP..katMAN" and "dustovich" for doing the digging on the Continental belt.

What about the water pump question?

Gates is good quality. I don't understand the fuss of OE belt going NLA if there is quality second hand..?

I use gates racing belts for my customers work out around £75-80 and are much harder wearing as the backs dont melt away with high rpm use.

I would use the RS2 waterpump.

Good way to trow big money in the bin.

Why fitting an ludicrously expensive RS2 water pump on an S2 ABY?

I did few times the pulley swap on my RS2 to save big money
water pump (body and impeller) it's exactly the same for ADU and ABY the difference it's just the pulley which IMHO does'nt make such a big difference in terms of performance.

Perhaps if in the future i find myself struggling to source the ADU toothed belt i would go for ABY belt and water pump and end this nightmare.
There are plenty of people who deleted the auxiliary radiator in the front in their heavily tuned ADUs without issues, i reckon that keeepng my aux rad and put slower (2/3 teeths?) water pump would not kill my cooling system nor my engine.
In this case I would suggest to psiconaut911 to buy an ABY dedicated water pump from a good OEM brand (i.e. Graf) for around 80/90 euros brand new fit it in the car and be happy.

If 169€ for a Waterpump ist to much for you i think you should consider if a S2 is the right car for you...

                  Hold on a sec please.....

You suggest to use an RS2 water pump... on an S2 ABY....
ADU pump which according to Audi Tradition online shop comes for a very convenient and cheap (yes i'm sarcastic here..)

                  € 303,30 plus shipping

Well if for you paying 303.30 for a water pump which it's basically the same item of an easy available pump that comes from Audi at a reasonable € 106,50..... (not € 169,00)
an item that can also be sourced for even less then that and of a top brand.

And you're suggesting to spend 300 and something euros to buy a pump which by the way is NOT the right one for the S2 ABY motor....
Well then I reckon You not me should consider to change your aim on cars because the S2 perhaps it's not your cup of tea

Buy yourself a Bugatti Veyron lucky chap!

                  P.S.
As per my nickname I have an RS2 not an S2 and people here know that I don't mind spending money to keep it in perfect shape but at the same time I try to be wise on money IF i have a chance.
And since 1997 I feel it's the right car for me.

You are taking to personal, your emotions are stronger than your brain...
Got my Pump from PK Motorsport for 169€ with the bigger pulley.
I combine it with a low Temp thermostat and never have more than 70° Celcius. No mather how hot it is outside.
Temperatur is very inportant on our engines...

                      I might take it personally....
But perhaps you're not technically up to the task.....
Let's see how strong it's your brain....

In order to have a better cooling the RS2 ADU motor was equipped with a different water pump pulley to increase the flow....
In order To achieve this even a non expert knows that you need a SMALLER pulley and not a larger one....
Temperature it's important for our engines right....
But the right temperature not a low temperature....
Even a complete non expert knows that a temperature lower then that the one set by the engineers that developed the engine will end up with attrition and hence wearing of spinning/moving parts.
I'm not expert but i know enough to say that 70 celsius it's way too cold for our engines but i can be wrong.
The first thing that comes to my mind it's..... Why the developers of our motors did'nt set a trmperature of 70 celsius if it was the right one?
Why the cooling fan kicks in at just above 90 celsius and goes off at around 85 celsius
If they wanted 70 celsius they could have easily set up a different lay out for the cooling fan could them?
But....To resume your well minded mod:

You put a larger pulley on your pump which will give less flow and so less cooling hence higher temps and then a lower temp set up on your thermostat.

With logical deduction you then spent money and time and did?
                      Nothing much?

                      Nothing personal eh?

We in Germany Run RS pulley, most of us are running 450++ HP, i assume we have more experience with the S2 Engine but perhaps we are all wrong and you are Right.

                          Trust me....

I might know more germans in the RS2/S2 panorama then you.
And some of the things that I stated above i have learned from....
                          Germans friends.
And I was not saying that Germans are wrong but that you were wrong.
That said to finish up this i believe that the thread has been enriched and not ruined by our posts exchange.
Like.... mods with larger pulleys together with low temp thermostats are.....
                          Should we say/agree.... useless?

Why on earth would anyone put a 70C thermostat in these engines?

And there is plenty of high power I5:ers using stock ABY or AAN waterpump. I don's see the logic in this RS2 pump thing..? I only understand using it in a fully OE RS2 car.

G62 Coolant Temp sensor info and reasons why it is important

Why yes it (temperature) is very important to our engines. That is why the Audi engineers decided on an 89 C thermostat and to use a G62 coolant temperature sender to tell the ECU what the temperature is. 70 C might be interpreted by the ECU as an engine that is not completely warm yet and, as a result, it will run the engine rich. Maybe that is what you want but it isn't they way to make good horsepower and/or clean environmentally friendly exhaust.
