    "Fun" with Flywheel TDC marks

Some Audi flywheels, like this AAR flywheel, were nicely marked with a "0" for top dead center that you used during cam timing by splitting the "0" in the crank timing window:

With the AANs, they degraded the marking to a single line, difficult to see

On the final closeout batch of AAN Dual Mass Flywheels, LUK apparently just gave up, with the result being this mess (Thanks for nothing):

    Bottomline:
The only way to safely determine where TDC is is to use the front crank pulley mark to ball park TDC and then to remove the No.1 plug and put a length of dowel into No.1 and "rock" the engine (perhaps off the cam sprocket) to get exactly TDC.

An alternative and probably better option is to take a reference flywheel and make a proper mark on your flywheel yourself (chisel+paint).

If you're in any doubt, the best way to tell TDC is to pus something that won't damage anything down the spark plug hole and watch it rise and then stop

I would stay away from the camshaft sprocket or affixment bolt when rocking the motor. Gear is fragile & you might damage the shutter wheel or inadvertently break or loosen the camshaft bolt. (Ask me how I know). Use the crankshaft bolt to turn the engine or rock the engine by moving the vehicle while in gear.

I use this method also, the simpliest way. I have tried to find the mark on flywheel but no results. (Just to be clear - we are talking about the first spark plug hole)

Okay, maybe NOT off the cam sprocket.

Update: Found the timing mark on NIB AAN DMFW

Not sure why the literature says the G4 is 62 degrees away from the TDC mark (= 62/360 x 135 = 23.25 teeth). It's actually at 38.25 (ish) teeth = 102 degrees. (!!??)

                  Need 3B flywheel info.

Anybody with a 3B flywheel: Can you count the number of ring gear teeth between the 3B crank position timing pin (literally a round bar/pin pressed into a hole in the flywheel) and the TDC mark stamped into the edge of the flywheel beside the ring gear. I am starting to suspect the "62 degrees" notation is BS.

The easiest way to turn the engine when the radiator is in place is from the pas pump. In fact there is a place for wrench there.

I have an AAN flywheel on my 2.5tdi, it is nearly impossible to see in a type 89 chassis. I normally resort taking an injector out and using a dial gauge
