Took the beast out for a gentle warm up before a blast on the way to do some work on our daughter's house.....got about 20 minutes down the road.....engine went very lumpy and there was an electrical burning smell. Pulled in, left engine running and popped the bonnet. There was some oil sprayed over the rear of the engine on the head near the coil pack connectors. Then oil gurgled out of top cover (above coil packs / plugs). Switched engine off.....made phone calls then re-started and coaxed her home. Not happy on anything but a mild throttle, missing a cylinder.
Next opportunity a few days later took her to my garage. Black smoke of oil on start up.....cleared a bit but very lumpy.......not a happy engine.
Phone call a little while later........one of your coil packs has disintegrated......there is oil under the top cover.
This is what greeted me.

Coil pack gone......that and the other 4 were only 2 years and 5,000 miles old....doh!
It looks to me like the cam cover gasket has failed allowing oil to seep into the spark plug / coil pack area of number 2 cylinder and play havoc......am i right?

shame a gasket that doesn't cost much can cause an expensive coil pack to go......guess that is the story with many a car
