UrS6 - 'Free' additional bhp - have a read to check

For the last while my car seemed to have gone off song, but the decline was insidious and gradual so I didn't notice it straightaway. It was more of a feeling than a definite issue for me.

It was boosting as per 'normal', with no boost leaks, no misfires, or other types of 'usual' faults.

But I decided to replace the vacuum hose from the by-pass valve to the small silver metal pipe running behind the cam belt wheel at the top of the engine. It could be spun around and I have the suspicion it may not be airtight at each end of the pipe.

So I sought to replace the old hard 'brittle' rubber pipe, as part of this process of cutting off the 'use once squeeze to tighten' oem jubilee clips, I needed to undo and take out the black bypass valve.

While it was out I 'tested' the valve by sucking on the small pipe coming out of the top of the valve. It didn't appear air tight, so I tried another spare one I had in the garage. I never throw out anything.

I put everything back together and the car boosted like a fried car.

I reckon if the improvement in frying is 4, my car had dropped back to an improvement of 2, but with the new valve it is now back to a 4.

It now gives all of the boost earlier and the boost is very consistent. Previously the level of boost on the dash read out was not quite consistent avery time, and not quite as high as it should have been. It is now higher and consistent each and every time like a machine.

So in summary while the old bypass valve was 'working' and allowing the car to boost but not properly. So I would suggest you either test yours or just replace it with a new one , they are not too dear, especially considering the improvement obtained with my 'new' one.

The earlier boosting, and the higher boosting straightaway makes the car much nicer to drive. The car was like a car with a cold, and now it is back to good health.

    Hope that experience helps others.

Yes, and not sure but less than €100.

The car is still a revelation. The previous one must have been failing / failed for ages / over a year.

I would recommend others check theirs in case they can even benefit even half as much as I did and it'll still be worth it.

Thanks Macspring i am definitely going to order one tomorrow from Audi. I might as well replace my hard plastic pipe.I checked on vagcat and it looks like you have to order 5 meters of the stuff.I'm not doing that so would like to know where you bought your pipe?

Hose from a motor factors. Not ideal or properly permanent, but it works for the next six months.

Oh well,as long as it works. Maybe we should do a group buy and buy what at least looks like the minimum order of 5 meters from audi.I could ask Audi tomorrow price and if it's available. What do you reckon?

Order a Bosch bypass valve for an S3 ending in 710N from the likes of German and Swedish as it will be less expensive than getting one from the dealer.

Interested to see how much 5 meters of oem vacuum hose if you're checking.

Thanks for this!. I'm new to Audi 20vt ownership. And after 12 months ownership of my S6 I wasn't impressed with the performance. So today I thought I'll check that little pipe. Soon as I touched the pipe it snapped, So I bodged what was left back on, Took it for a spin, And wow what a difference. I have ordered a new 710n valve with a new pipe included. Cheers!

Great stuff,it's always exciting fixing things as small as this that have big benefits. Ive ordered my DV it's already here and it now ends in 710 P. http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/262181552314

Where did you get that pipe from??

Hi guys, this is interesting because I don't think my S6 is boosting as much as it should be either although this is the first one I've driven!

The dash shows 1.8 on acceleration I think, what should it be?

Hi Yaz,Macsprings post is indeed very interesting as it's not apparent elsewhere AFAIK about this problem with the hard plastic tube that seams to leak boost.

Your readout should read 2.1 bar max when you floor it in a high gear going up hill starting at say 50 mph. Merry Christmas Yaz.

Yeah see I'm sure mine is 1.8 bar max possibly even less. Although the last time I drove the S6 was when we went to ADI in October.

I will check it again in the new year at some point and perhaps try a new valve. And thank you Macspring for sharing this info

Merry Christmas to you too Mark, hope you and the family have a good one!

                            Roll on next year!

                            Thanks
