I started removing my turbo today as I'm planning a new turbine housing and was surprised to see this when I pulled the inlet pipe off. Google suggests it looks like surge damage - but I'm not getting any indications of surge.
There is no opportunity I can see for particles to get past the air filter.
The only other thing I can think off is back pressure similar to surge damage when I lift off throttle. I have been running 29psi and kept blowing hose clips off on lift off despite having good ABA spring clips from demon tweeks. Also the end caps on my aluminium intercooler are little rounded so there is a lot of pressure build up in there.
I fitted an extra dump valve a few weeks ago and it fixed the hoses blowing so hopefully this pressure relief will prevent reoccurrence of the tip damage - if that's the cause.
Sound plausible?

My old intercooler had plastic end caps which would blow off on throttle closure on full boost.
