    Definitely Coils??

    Hi All

In short I have a misfire issue. At ADi my TB boost hose popped off and after refitting it the car had a slight hiccup at 3.5k and then started misfiring badly at 5k. I'm not sure if the hose coming off is the cause or not but so far I've been advised mostly that the issue is coil related. Before I go out and spend precious cash on some new coils I'm hoping to get solid confirmation that the misfire is definitely coil related and not something else that I've overlooked? One thing I did notice was a fair amount of residual oil in the boost hoses (assumed to be from the breather system) so need to be sure that this hasn't caused the misfire somehow. I've also read that similar symptoms could be fuel supply related but I can't think why this would happen suddenly after the hose popping off? For info the engine is RS2 spec and is running a TS tuning chip.
What are your thoughts clever helpful people??

    Coil and POS diagnostics info

There are ways to figure out if a) you have a weak coil and/or b) have a problem with a power output stage (POS) and which one.

Replace the spark plugs with some NGK ones as a first step. Then use Dave's suggestions.

      Just my now thoughts.

Nice one Dave. Slightly concerned by the number of things that could be causing the issues though! I'll sleep on it and have another read when my brain is refreshed! Pretty sure I've got some Pos units in the garage somewhere so could start with doing some swapping, checking MAf connectors (the hose is a recent silicone Samco so can hopefully rule that out.) and then look at the coil wiring and plugs.
Hope I sort it soon as my bro is over from Zambia and hasn't been in the car yet.

I'll try the plugs, probably a good idea to get a new set anyway. Do you know which NGKs they are off the top of your head? I'm still confused over which plugs are in favour at the moment...

            I would suggest
            Check fault codes
            Boost leak test
            Further diagnosis as needed

As discussed before, the symptoms were identical to my experience last year. It's either coils of wiring to the coils. When you/we take things apart, you'll since at the state of the wiring; I rebuilt mine with heatshrink and it lasted 2 years more but it was a pig of a job.

Offer of borrowing my coil conversion is still there

If you replace the original coils Automark can supply original ones at a good price not the ridiculous £149 each that TPS are asking last time I checked

How much does he charge for each unit?? Would prefer to go oem as aftermarket will alter the visual aspect of the engine bay.

Russ I have a pair of good POS units you are welcome to borrow for testing should you need to.
If you need any help installing new OEM coils give me shout. We can improve on the OEM wiring protection under the cover, and use the correct crimp terminals rather than soldering
Another option is using LS coils and keeping your 20v turbo cover

I'm confused as much as you as to the in favour plug.I have a feeling it's the NGK Iridium for normal 230bhp tune and RS2 tune cars but would feel more confident if someone can confirm this for myself and Russ with a link Alex ? Cheers.

The reason a lot of people are running the NGKs is that the OEM Bosch F5DPOR have caused some serious issues whereby the ceramic breaks off the plug and damages pistons, heads, valve seats and turbos - not good at all. Whether these are counterfeit items that have entered the supply chain or Bosch has a problem - who knows.

The NGK a lot of people including me are running for stock-ish S2/RS2 power is the BKR7EIX.

I used to use the same plugs as Alex. Never an issue with them. Mind you, they replaced the OEM bosch plugs which I never had an issue with either. When they were changed, I did not check the colour of the letting. I recall reading somewhere that blue (or was it black) lettering were knock off plugs and the black (or was it blue) were the real deal. Clearly my lack of knowledge is no help ref the Bosch plugs but the NGK plugs worked fine with absolutely no difference in performance whatsoever.
