7A fan problem - on when cold

    Morning,
Took my coupe Quattro out on Wednesday night, drove lovely and when I got home all was well, noticed the fan was on but I had been driving 'spiritedly'. Usually it goes off pretty quickly but I didn't hang around t see if it would stop! Went to get in my car on Thursday morning and the battery was dead as anything. Finally got a chance after charging battery up to get it back on and as soon as I put it on without touching he ignition the fan started up. Is this something to do with the under bonnet sensor on the 7A? The fan used to make horrible squeaking when it was on in the summer so might need to replace it too.
    Many thanks
    Rob

I'd suspect that temp sensor near the back of the cam cover.

Yep I would to, that or damaged wiring, I don't think it is very well protected there. It is the one that sits on a bracket, in free air.

I thought there was a relay under the bonnet as well that can stick?

          Update

Ok I've removed that sensor completely and connected the battery up, fan is still going! I suppose it depends if it works on an open or closed circuit? I have a digital multimeter so are there any resistance readings that I can test the sensor? What's this relay that you speak of?
          Many thanks!

Thanks for all your help guys it was Relay 2 labeled up at relay '214' which after some research is a classic one to stick. Took it out and gave it a wack put it back and the fan isn't coming on anymore! Il test it tomorrow as Il tack it to work and sit with it to make sure it goes off haha

                  Yes

It's good isn't it, and it drove like normal to work this morning! Ordered some spare second hand 214s to put in the glovebox. You never know!

Best off changing that relay once you have a new one as it will probably stick again
