Both had the same physical dimensions, anti drain back valve, and the same rating of pressure relief valve. The difference was the filtration, the 20v versions filtered to a smaller micron level.

I don't know how a diesel filter compares to a petrol filter, but judging by how much soot contamination you see in diesel engines i doubt it filters any where near as well.
Wouldn't be too bothered about the supposed micron rating as the tdi engines do mega miles too and both I have turned into strokers required no crank work with good bearings.

I was in my local TPS yesterday for a couple of seals for my AEL.
Ordered an oil filter whilst I was there to be told they are NLA.

Why do the diesel engines have a bigger filter ?

The level of filtration would override the size of the filter for me. Just sayin......

Not sure why a tdi would tolerate dirtier oil than an 20vt or why a 20vt would need cleaner oil than a tdi? Bigger is surely better. Lower velocity due to larger surface area is bound to drop out more rubbish in the filter media.

The W950/4 above is on my ABY, gives an extra .5ltr of oil and better oil pressure on idle by .7bar

Make sure you fill the filter before fitting it

That big one is also a T4 Van filter, I have a genuine VW one in it's box left over from when I had a LWB 2.4 oil burner, good van to be honest. Nothing wrong with fitting a larger filter, gives more surface area for filtration and also acts as a cooler due the much greater exterior surface area.

Just be sure to fill it before you fit it as Rikki say's.
