UrS6 - Getting heat into the engine oil sooner ?

Recently I changed the water thermostat on my daily driven UrS6 and it turns out it was the original one, and I fitted a dealer sourced replacement, and I feel that the car warms up quicker, and the coolant system is that bit better for the new thermostat, ( imo ).

With my S2 and this car the engine oil never seems to get anywhere near 'hot'. It presumable gets up to the correct temperature, but certainly never 'overheats' - I see others replacing their oem oil cooler with a bigger oil cooler as they were having cooling issues???

What I'm wondering is, is there something, like a spring inside the mounting for the oil filter, that I can replace with a new one so that it might shorten the warm up period ?

    Thanks for any feedback.

I have never had that issue with my AAN S4. The V8 S4 is slower to warm the oil and the V6 Auto C4 avant was also slower.

In any event, you might want to visit this post that I did: http://forums.quattroworld.com/s4s6/msgs/72682.phtml

In there, Item 11 is probably what you are thinking of. Whether there is another spring that would stay closed longer, I don't know. I suppose you could shim it a bit to increase the pressure and keep it closed longer.

The turbo motors will heat the oil a lot faster as its basically be pumped through the exhaust manifold while cooling the turbo. Its been a while since i had one apart, but from memory there is no oil flowing through the cooler until the thermostat opens (item 10). From memory its opening point is ~100-110c.

The whole cooler setup does work as i could easily get my 7A upto 110-120c with hard driving, or cruising down the motorway at high speed, it really should have had a cooler. Its rare to see the temps climb on the S2 during road use, but for track use where you are always in the higher rev range i could imagine the need for a larger cooler, especially with higher HP motors.

I have the same problem, oil takes an age to warm up and very rarely goes above 100c.

My engine is in bits so I might have a look inside the thermostat valve.

If your oil stat is faulty and doesn't close properly that will impede the oil warm-up and this time of year it may never reach optimum temps during cruise.

Synthetic oil offers its best at around 100c.

I installed a 3B cooler on my 7A, made a real difference and oil temps rarely went above 110c on track.
With the ABY motor this is a different story and I was getting 130c+ on the road
The ABY/RS2 cooler is better than the 3B unit but still a standard car will easily overload its cooling abilities with sustained hard driving. Bigger oil cooler is a must on any car that sees a track IMHO.

Want to ensure that the oil warms up as quickly as "I" can make it, as most of my journeys are short, less than 5 miles.

I put my thermostat in a pan of boiling water, it started opening at 70c and was pretty much fully open an 90. It has 100c stamped on the end of it so I thought this was unusual behaviour compared to a water thermostat which pretty much opens at the temp stated.

Can the wax inside be effected by age and heat?

I did a quick search on eBay and found nothing.

I have welded a threaded boss on them back to cover of the thermostat housing so I can adjust how far the thermostat opens.

Any thought to using the oil to water heat exchanger that is fitted to a 1.8T engine? Space would be tight with it sandwiched between the oil filter housing & filter. The oil filter would set very low too. You could still use the air to water cooler as well. Plumbed to the engine cooling system it would help to warm up the engine oil faster. I have seen oil to water oil coolers fitted to a few racecars as it makes for a more compact oil cooling system.

On my Urs4 I have fitted a large oil to water heat exchanger. Maybe not ideal for track work but fine for normal road work. It was 50kw ratted and I have it on the coolant loop that heats my gas vapourisor.

I've been searching eBay for a cheap laminova oil/water heat exchanger for ages but they don't often come up.
