Try take battery out of another car just to check. If the current battery is totally dead and still connected, it will struggle to start when jumped. Halfords have battery testing gear if you want it tested.

Thanks guys I'm getting the AA out tomorrow. I suspect it's the problem but I also think the immobiliser is draining the batt.

From now on I'll hook it to a trickle charger but once it's been MOTd I'll be using it at least once a week

AA man (unless he's worried about his targets?-PLC Co. now.....how you can performance manage a breakdown company I'll never know!?) will be able to check parasitic drain, charging system and do a test on the battery. Of those 3 tests, something will be not quite right.
Now and again Lidl do a special on a trickle charger/battery conditioner. About £14.....worth it!

AA guy love selling batteries to the members! I bet that's good commission for them.

The trickle chargers from Lidle are a copy of the Ctek items which are great. Get one when they next arrive in stock if you can.

Update - the battery was at fault. Was taking no charge and had been transplanted from another vehicle into the RS2 (had signs of engine bay muck all over it). It wasn't powerful enough either, the 700amp jump pack started the car no probs. Now I have a Yuasa 100 or something - 670amp with a larger reserve. Car starts nicely now. So apart from the rear brake calliper seizing I was able to get her to Automark where she'll be until my wallet has taken a full pounding!

              Cheers for the help all
