Surge tanks and fuel pumps. Educate me.

So for my urq I plan on having an alloy fuel tank made as the original steel tank is knackered. I was thinking I need a surge tank also to keep fuel flowing while tracking. So how should it be connected.

Use a large capacity low pressure pump to feed from the tank through a filter to the surge tank? Have the top of the surge tank connected to the main tank. Then have a high pressure pump feed from the surge tank to the engine with the fuel pressure regulator returning to to surge tank?

I have a 044 pump in my store but can use anything else that is suggested as better. Any suggestions as to what pumps to use and we're to buy? I want fueling for 700 bhp on e50 or m50. I have methonal I can use and was planning on mixing it to make up to m50 for track work. I already have 1200cc at 3 bar e14 injectors which should be ok on m50.

    Cheers.

Des: You will enjoy reading this post about an UrS4 in the US: http://forums.quattroworld.com/s4s6/msgs/243619.phtml

This car is called "da fridge" because of its whiteness. Under the hood it is a monster. 044 in the OE tank feeding a surge tank (black between the coolant over flow tank and the windscreen washer fluid reservoir) and then two 044 feeding a new billet EFI Express fuel rail.

Hi des my setup is similar 040 low pressure pump from intank to fuel surge tank then two 044 fuel pumps with fuel filter to engine, return fuel line to surge tank and maybe over flow line from surge tank back to fuel tank if your getting a fuel tank made there's option to put them hydramat in tank as it picks up fuel at lowest point and there's them Ali baffle explosive balls which can help been speaking to my friend who races in thunder saloons in his holdon manaro

Ok cheers. The 040 is a hp pump which is fine just not optimised for low pressure high flow into a surge tank. I'm thinking or a carb style high flow alcohol compatible pump. These use less amps too.

Anyone have links or suggestions of best places to buy?

If you're making a new fuel tank then an elegant solution would be to incorporate the swirl pot and lift pump into the fuel tank, you could partition off a corner of the fuel tank to act as a swirl pot. The lift pump could sit in the middle of the tank surrounded by baffles and feed the outlet of the pump into the partition.

I would use this as the lift pump

              http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Walbro-Fuel-...885?nav=SEARCH

And 2 x bosch 044's to the rail.

The tank would have 2 x outlets from the partition and 1 x inlet into the top of the partition, no overflows will be needed because fuel just spills back into the main tank.

I would need someone to make the tank so I'm thinking it would be easier to have all the swirl pot stuff separate to ease construction. I do like the idea of the lift pump in the main tank though.

                Are 044 pumps alcohol compatible?

That 450 walbro pump is alcohol safe so 2 of those in a surge tank should take care of the hp side.

I have ordered a holley black which is also alcohol safe as a lift pump from tank to surge pot. I have one large 10 an 100 micron fuel filter but would like a 10 micron unit after the pump And before the injectors. Any I see are paper and not alcohol compatible. Any links there.

For those interested EFI Express is
making dual walbro 450 intank pump
brackets. I was going to run a surge
tank until I heard from them.

Cool. I have just received 2 walbro 450 pumps and they are actually quite small, so I can see how they would fit in a Urs4 tank with a bracket. I'm picking up a nuke performance surge tank for them on Tuesday. So that's the high pressure part of the fuel system sorted. Still waiting on the 500 l per hour low pressure holey pump from the USA. Then I just need a tank...

I use a Walbro GS-340 in my Audi 100 in the Tank and go pressureless foward to the surge tank.
From the surgetank 2xBosch 044 supply the rail.

The Walbro GS-340 can make 4,5Liter/min. without pressure.
The Bosch 044 pump can do 4,7liter/min. without pressure.

                            oem S2(aby) 2,8Liter/min
                            oem RS2 3Liter/min
