Help 2.5tdi Ael Fuel Pump Timing

HI I NEED HELP WITH MY 1996 AEL 2.5TDI A6.
THE CAR WAS STANDING FOR MORE THEN A YEAR AND WHEN I BOUGHT IT ITS HARD TO START IT UP AND ONES ITS FIRED UP LOADS OF BLUE/WHITE SMOKE COMES OUT AND IT SMOKES UNTIL IT GETS WARM....
I DONE A LEAK TEST ON INJECTORS AND ONE WAS FAULTY SO I CHANGED IT AND NOW ITS FINE BUT STILL HARD TO START AND SMOKES THE SAME....
MAYBE THE TIMING NEEDS CHANGING?IF YES HOW DO I DO IT?
    ANY IDEA?

Haha, I will also need to do this also on my AEL, only difference is that it's sitting in a Volvo. The head has been off, and I have no clue how to setup the pump timing.

If I recall correctly then via the belt in the back of the engine. Get everything into marks and align the pump. Strap the back belt on it and start it. Connect VCDS (or VAG-COM) and you can see the injection timing. I don't remember the degrees, but you can find them. After that it's a process of rinse and repeat - belt off, correct pump pulley, belt on, start, check timing, if correct then profit, if not, do it again.

At tdc. the pump plunger has to be at 0.25mm
I, usualy, make them at a little more advance...so..0.30mm
Is tricky...untill you find the right spot.
        You need an dial gauge.
        Goodluck!

Sounds like VCDS is easyest option then, but i heard that even if the timing is spot on these engines not allways run,the timing needs to be earlyer...

You really need VCDS to check the timing, and it needs to be the full version not the free-ware version. You will get a graph with 3 lines on, I always run mine advanced right up to the green line.

Hmm, I don't think VAG-COM will work with my Volvo..?

just use vag com and use tdi timing graph.

no need to remove the belt, just loosen the pulley and turn it
