    AAH to ABY/AAN/3B conversions

    Hi guys,

I've been pecking away with restoring/rebuilding my 94 2.8CQ and I'm rapidly approaching decision time regarding engines. Originally I was quite happy to keep my 2.8 but now I'm 2nd thinking that and really want to go 5 pot turbo. I've searched a bit and have some good threads bookmarked to read through for the actual swap but my main question is regarding costs as obviously these vary over time. I haven't really seen many complete engines for sale so firstly I was wondering what kind of money I should be looking at paying?
I'm not in any great hurry to actually do the conversion but I'd like to start picking up the parts req'd and getting the bay prepped for it instead of wasting time and money on the 2.8(oil leak and exhaust need doing) then regretting it later if that makes sense.

Gearbox wise, Is it preferred to change my 5 speed for a 6 at the same time?

At this stage I'm trying to balance the books and get a rough figure in mind so I can make it happen, any advice or tips would be greatly received!!

    Thanks Alan

        Also 2.8.
You need engine mounts on the front longitudinals members with cooling radiator mounting also. You will need to custom install them.Gearbox ok if no power mods are done or launch controll etc.
If you want to have fun with it you need 01E gearbox, correct ratio rear differencial, propshaft, front subframe, gearbox mounts, shifter mechanism.
And the rest:cooling radiator with lines, oil coolant radiator with lines, intercooler with lines, exhaust, batery relocation, engine loom.
Pas pump you will use from the v6.But you need power steering lines.
Or you could get a 2.7 turbo in it.Radiators stay in the same place, engine mounts the same. But you will need to make rooms for the turbines.Look on the forum there are some 2.7 projects.Or go to 1 turbo with the 2.7 and no need to mod the front longitudinal members. But you will loose 2 turbo fun at low revs.

        Good luck!!

          The main costs would be:
Engine with manifolds and turbo ~£1200
          Gearbox £300
          ECU £200
          Loom £100
          Gear linkage £200
+ lots and lots of work

At the end of it you'll have a car that is worth more in parts which is never great. Buying an S2 would probably be a better idea, or go for a different engine.

That would certainly be the sensible approach but I'm not sensible when it comes to cars. I've already spent too many ££s and hours on the car to sell it on, I'm too attached to it to start again.

That has been considered and is still an option. ABY would be my first choice but I have to balance the costs, diyable and other factors into the equation.

Thanks, I've missed that thread but bookmarked now and looking forward to reading through it. V6 Biturbo was another option I've considered but I'd sort of dismissed it as I've not much experience of the electronic/looms side of things envolved in a swap, quite happy welding/spannering but I've not really read that much regarding it so will have a search.

Thanks, I'm sort of used to owning cars that would be worth more broken into parts so that's not an issue for me. I'm probably different to most in that building a fake S2 would mean and feel so much better to me than just buying one, I get as much enjoyment working on cars as I do driving them. I'm not a millionaire so I just have to strike a balance between what is achievable by myself and the costs involved.
