  • Has anyone used asymmetrical pistons?

I'm ordering pistons today or tomorrow and JE has FSR pistons for the Audi RS2.
I'll be using these in my AAN, but a footnote on JE's site says the oil squirters must be removed or bushed out or something.
Anyone used these, and identified a solution?
Just didn't want to run into any serious headaches when I give them to the shop

Well, I guess I'll be (one of?) the first.

Most pistons are asymmetric. The pin is slightly offset from the centre line to balance the thrust forces, also you will notice a lot of pistons have a machined or cast/forged recess to provide clearance for the piston cooling jets.
I wouldn't use those pistons on a road car, the 2618 alloy has high thermal expansion rate so you need to run loose bore clearances which will mean have a lot of piston slap and burn a lot of oil.

4032 is a far better choice unless the motor is pretty extreme and you can swallow the compromise that comes with it. 4032 is also harder so wears less. My 2c

I thought I read differing information though

I didn't find anyone making RS2 pistons using this "new" 4032 alloy that seems to be closer to ideal than the former, and I read piston slap stories about all of them for various reasons.
I believe It really comes down to the build.

I'm honing to 81.5, polishing the crank, zero balancing the rotating assembly without the pulley, then the pulley itself, Scat rods and these FSR pistons. Hopefully if I get everything right, I will not be adding to the piston slap stories.

we'll see in a few weeks! Lot's of stuff to get ready in the meantime!

You mean these kind of pistons?

I think all JE pistons will be FSR design now on..? FCP did deliver these kind of JE's to a finnish forum member not long time ago.

You can't get around needing to run loose bore clearances. 4032 isn't new, just that JE don't tend to use it as the majority of their products are race orientated
Mahle, Wossner are two manufacturers off the top of my head that will supply I5 pistons in 4032

Yep, just like those. Turns out (on the AAN at least) there are no clearance issues for the squirters. I picked the engine up today built and balanced.
