Bosch 044 gap at the bottom of strainer

Guys I have just had the tank cleaned it was full of rust and grit of some sorts. While doing this job I am replacing the original ABY pump and basket.

All is going well until it came to the distance from the bottom of the 044 to the bottom of the new basket.

The pump is located as it should be but there is a gap at the bottom of about +/- 15mm.

From what I see it just needs an M18 x 1.5 with a hole in the centre for the fuel pickup, a sort of distance piece.

Obviously the lower the better but if you close the gap up to much then you will start to restrict the flow. I was thinking 4 or 5mm from the inlet of the 044 to the strainer bottom.

What did you set the gap to when you did your upgrade to the Bosch 044?

    Thanks

Lots of 044s have been mounted in 60 mm V8 fuel pump baskets and then remounted in the tank in the OE base mount.

Mounting it in the tank is not the issue. I know it will fit. I have all the parts I need.

I have exactly what is in your picture.

I am refering to the bottom inlet of the pump and the distance between that and the strainer basket. (the little starainer basket in your picture)

Should I use a spacer to get the inlet closer to the bottom of the strainer and if I should how close should I get the inlet opening of the pump to the strainer basket.

I would think the closer to the bottom the better. But I do not wish to restrick the inlet flow and cause cavitation nor do I feel like leaving it with a big gap (15mm) and cause air suction if the tank level gets low.

There was a thread that shows this small alteration but I have lost link and now cannot find it.

I fitted one of these recently and just pushed the pump into the basket as far as it would go then replaced into tank as before, seems to work fine had the fuel gauge pretty low almost at the bottom of the red and not run out of fuel early so guessing its OK.

Think the only issue would be running out of fuel early if the pump sits a bit higher

Not good running out of petrol in some places in South Africa.

Thinking just to be in the safe side lower it to the 5/16

I got some advice to fit this on the bottom of the pump.

It's not a good idea to run a tank empty anyway so if the gap is a few mm bigger it will only serve to stop any bits in the tank getting dragged through the system, just do a few test runs with can of spare juice in the boot to be safe

If it's in the basket you shouldn't need to add this

Agree but maybe for different reasons. These intake fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel that they are immersed in. If you run the tank dry (or very close to it), then you are going to be overheating the fuel pump at least a bit and it will die sooner than later. Fine if you enjoy huffing petrol fumes and getting high and killing brain and liver cells but otherwise, not recommended.

Once every 100K miles or so is more than often.

When the fuel gauge goes into the red "R" (= reserve), then you need to fuel up now if you want to let your fuel pump (either stock or 044) live longer.

                  Just sayin'.
