    K26/27 turbo

    Hey all,
Been here a while. Had a UrS4 in Canada when I lived there and I have recently bought Teg's emerald S2 from him.

The car has had quite a number of upgrades done to it including RS2 EM, intercooler, uprated injectors, fuel pump, and the subject of this thread a K26/27 hybrid.

I have read elsewhere that the turbo should spool up by around 3500rpm or so. The thing is on my car it doesnt give full boost until 5,500 rpm. When it does come on it is impressive but the lag is pretty big. Anyone got any ideas if 5,500 Rpm is normal for one of these or could there be something amiss?

The only thing I have noticed is that I think there is a small exhaust leak at the head/EM interface, charachterised by the put put put noise on cold idle.

    Any helo would be super!

    Paddy

5500 does sound pretty late...however It's possible that MRC did the mapping like that as the bottom end is still stock, best bet is ask them how it should be performing.

A leak at the exhaust mani will certainly cause more lag.

It certainly won't be helping matter's at all and needs attending to.

I recall Teg mentioning in the advert that MRC mapped it so that the bottom end was safe, has the car got a boost gauge fitted?

          Thanks guys,
It does indeed have a boost gauge. Gets to about 2 bar at full boost.
I am thinking rods may be a good idea soon. Can you guys recommend anyone to install some forged rods and an idea of cost (not including rods)?
          Thanks

Dave F. here. Hope things are going well for you. Mining still isn't doing that well in BC.

Do you recall who bought your UrS4? PM me here or email me at forgied@shaw.ca. Need to add the new owner to our BC/Alta/Sask email list.

Yeah, to make the most of the turbo I'd expect rod's to be mandatory, 2 bar is a healthy amount with a K26/7 so it should go really well if mapped to take full advantage of the turbo. However it's going to start getting expensive and a lot depends on what spec of K26/7 you have fitted, there's many different combinations out there. I have an old school MTM unit fitted to my RS2 which I know uses a K26 #6 hot-side and what I think is a K27 cold-side from a BMW, that hit's full boost (1.5 bar) just before 3.5K and is supposed to be 340 bhp.

Rod's is a head off job so your going to be looking at least £500 (conservative estimate) and a remap is about the same.

Recommendations depend a bit on where your located in the UK, my first choice would probably be VRS, however MRC as well as DNA are both also very well regarded and I'm sure there's plenty of other capable people.

replacing rods is something any competent mechanic can do. its a diy also if you know your way around the engine IMO.

get the rods weight matched, new gaskets, rod bearings and head bolts as a minimum.

I totally agree, replacing the rods is a job any competent mechanic should be able to do, personally I'd do the job myself and next year I will be offering my services to other forum members.

However I'm still building for the rest of this year as I'm involved in project that requires my input and it's for my family so apart from helping a couple of friends with their cars I can't take on any other major work. I also have three cars I must get ready to sell this year...this is my number one priority.

The main reason I suggested the places I did is that as well being highly familiar with the engine they can do the entire job including remapping, though I think Danny at DNA prefers to use VEMS.

But yep, any half decent mechanic would be able to install a set of rods.

Thanks guys, I'll give VRS a call today.

I would be inclined to install the rods myself alright but the only issue is that I can't balance the bottom end myself. I may well take the engine to bits supply the parts needed for balancing to a specialist and then reassemble the engine myself, I would just need to find somewhere to do it. There is a place in Acton where you can rent a bay with a lift but what do I do with a car with no engine for 4 weeks in London?

In that situ I would be inclined to take to a garage. I had the bottom end rebalanced by JP when I did mine. Basset down balancing have also done other members cars too. Before you do that check the boost curve as suggested
