Hydraulic lifters - why design changed?

I bought new INA lifters, after around 5,000 miles a few have become noisy.

At least 3 of them do not keep pressure at all and having removed the cam cover to check, it is clearly a lifter issue.

The original lifters had a much larger oiling hole with a kind of angled entrance. All the new lifters seem to have a simple small hole. Why was this changed? Can't really see it is cost related, or is it?

I don't have photos of my lifters but found images online which illustrate the difference. Comments welcome!

There is a check valve in the piston, sounds like some of yours have failed. Were they OEM?

Yeah, OEM INA non lightweight ones...

It leaves me with a dilemma as to what to do... more new ones (new design) which might fail, or fit a good set of old ones which were not noisy.....

Just replace the new noisy ones with good known second hand ones. Just squeeze them out a couple of times to flush them and check the contact face is in good condition and you're sorted.

You can see which are the noisy ones as they will be the soft ones.

Sounds like a plan - what worries me slightly is that my old ones are the big hole version, I'm guessing it won't be an issue to mix'n'match old and new... I could choose best new 10 and best old 10 and fit inlet with matching and exhaust with matching.... I need to check all of them any way.....

It won't make any difference, if they work they work. Just swap the noisy ones or you will be chasing the problem again and a again.

I did the same to my last set. A bit time consuming, but not a bad job. If you have poor eyesight don't try it....the parts are small, especially the spring.

What causes them to need cleaning? New engine, new lifters, new oil, etc... 5000 miles?

I have removed the cams ready to check out how many are bad at the weekend - hope no more than 10 as I've only got 10 spare old good ones....

I've had a couple of the lightweight ina ones fail at high revs when i tried 5w40 and 5w50 oil.

                          Cheers Alex.

I'm hoping my 10 good spares are enough to make 20 good ones. If not, a scavenging I will come.....

Stay away from lightweight lifters, they are wrong ones for these engines. Right part number is: 420 0022 10
