    7A not starting

For quite a while my 7A equipped coupe has been a real pig to start. Just cranks and cranks but doesn't fire, sometimes it does finally start but now it's not starting at all. I've recently (couple of months back) changed the dizzy cap, rotor arm and set of plugs and fitted a decent second hand isv. This hasn't really helped and when changing the isv I found a split hose (the one from the isv to inlet manifold) so I need to source one of them which will hopefully sort the rough running but I don't think it'll sort the starting issue. Any ideas anyone?

Think back to basics would be the first step, as above-is there fuel pressure?
Are you getting HT spark at king lead?.....at plug leads?
Is there power at injector wiring?

          7a starting problems

Hiya bud. Yeah had the same sort of issues. Mine was quite expensive to sort out. Had unmetered air, crappy injectors and a hairline crack in the inlet manifold, oh and the M.A.F was sticking so overall wasnt good. Got it all sorted now but hope to god getting yours sorted doesnt cost you half as much as it did mine.

I certainly hope it doesn't cost a bomb as hopefully about to buy our first house! So money will be a bit tight to say the least. When it's actually running it drives sweet apart from a high idle so I don't think there can be that much wrong... Famous last words!

high idle, poor starting, I would immediately hazard a guess at an air leak.

If you need some 7A parts for decent price just ask. Have a lot of them.

hi yeah mine was doing just that. When it did run was running ok, idle was high and a bit erratic. temperature sensors and un metered air check the M.A.F too. good luck

Well I've done a few checks and made a temporary repair to the split hose and things are looking up, it now starts but idle isn't quite right, still a tad high and revs are slowish to drop back I'll check the maf and other hoses for splits ect

You say you've fitted new ISV but have you stripped and cleaned it? Is it the early one bolted to the air-box(with 5-branch ex manifold) or later cylindrical one as of later cars with cast manifold?

I haven't, I was sold it as being in good working order. It's the cylindrical type.

20v.org has some advice on maintaining the 7a. The ISV is a damper for sudden throttle changes, the engine should start AND idle with it electrically disconnected. Suggest you go throw the basic troubleshooting and don't discount weak spark due to a old/bad coil, old plug wires.

I think that's exactly what he's done and so now starting isn't a problem but idle speed is the issue?

That's right, it now starts line it used to but idle is a little high ~950-1000 rpm, I'll source a replacement hose and see how I get on with that.
