    5 Valve heads for S2 / RS2

I have a firm looking into the possibility of having a 25V head for the Big Five engine, the prototype will be based on the 5V head as used in the Groups 4 cylinder, though if more are to be made, they will be completely new castings. The cams are being supplied by a seperate German firm.

Hmmmmmmm sounds interesting, but I think for less money you could get a 20v head to work just as good with some porting and a decent valve job. This is based on the fact that there is very very little difference in terms of airflow between a 4 valve and 5 valve head.
Remember that the F1 boys dabbled with 5 valve heads many years ago, they soon realised that 5 valve heads had no real advantage over 4 valve heads and in some cases they were a disadvantage, hence the reason why they stuck with 4 valve heads

          Volvo 5 vavle head?

I thought I read that it has been done?

Is it really that necessary anyways?

This is when my american instincts say that if your digging this deep into getting more power, shouldn't you just consider more cylinders?

          However:

          Everything is about business investments.

Audi had a prototye 5V head for the S2, just before the 5 zyl was discontinued. it produced 600PS from 2,226cc. You can do a search, you'll see the motor on a rig. On a N/A engine I reckon it will be too peaky for everyday driving, but fine with forced induction, as Audi engineers proved. Shame the Big Five was discontinued, this would have been the penultimate in 5 zyl development. Josh, the Volvo 5 zyl is only available in 10 & 20V guise and the T5 and T5-R were based on an Audi programme. As for more cylinders, it is very possible to transplant a different engine (as I have done) but I know lots of owners are addicted to the 5 zyl 'warble' and would rather stick with 5. These ARE complete heads and are being engineered to be a direct replacement for the original 4V jobs.

I´m very interested, how long to wait and how much?

I agree, addictive is a good way to describe it, there is nothing like that five cylinder sound in fact I hardly ever use my stereo, and like some other (less healthy) addictions its cost me sh$t loads.........a bit sad I know, but at least I´m not alone here where thats concerned

Not sure how much its all gonna cost, still my wife don't know what I'm up to, else she'll hit the roof big time! I did a deal, so the firm is gonna work at their own pace to keep costs to a minimum, between doing their regular work. Still gonna be steep initially, I reckon, I'll keep you posted.

Vagsport - I have NO idea how much these things would cost, so steep doesn't mean anything - £1000? £2000? What do you class as steap - just need an idea so I can increase my Visa card limit

How much does a standard complete S2 or RS2 head cost? (I know these will be STEEP)

Your right you are sad. LOL. The amount my car has cost, I could have had a wicked time on more harmful addictions

But yeah ok, that 5 pot noise is wierd and quality. Even Dads V5 Passat has a similar noise.

I think 2 grand is way too low mate for a 5 valve head! They will probably cost much more even if someone is prepared to make a major gamble on all of the tooling charges and expect a decent production run of say 50+ units.
I have to agree with Paul. Spend the money on sorting the 4 valve head. That's what I am doing!

You're probably right Lee, but for what it has cost me so far (£4,500 which covered the cost of a new 4 zyl. 5V head and sundries) it's not so bad, bearing in mind people ask £1,000 approx. for a flowed 5 zyl 4V head. I should imagine it will cost me in the region of £15,000 for the first one, but I have a couple of people sharing the cost with me, so it aint so bad. Might be a bad move, but I won't know 'cept I try...

I agree with Doug, see ya. But unless its tried, who knows what can be done with 5 more valves? go for it Vagsport dude! Why not?

Does flowing the 4 valve head help that much? Looks pretty good design already. OK so everything can be improved, but is it worth bothering with?
