The time has come to finally start slowly building a bigger turbo setup for my stock AAN. I would like to keep stock rods for the time being (all of that later) and have been looking at this kit:
Together with all the supporting mods installed inc working with stock rods.
My question is this: If I was to buy another turbo to use with that kit, is there some calculations / method for working out what would respond well and what wouldn't with that specific tune?
I'm keen on using a holset turbo for various reasons, not only the cost. I have been looking at compressor maps, trying to work out pressure ratio's and attempting to compare turbos with the GT3071r but finding it difficult - due to my lack of experience here.
I have an idea that it could be something along the lines of:
HY35
HX32 or bigger?
I would happily trial turbo's out on the car, but the last thing I want to do is bend rods or blow up the motor - is it possible to gradually test turbo's while monitoring AFR? and if so, can you pick up on bad things happening before it is too late? - how? Will motronic save the engine if it detects problems, will the tune adapt to the turbo in any way?
I have some experience with the N54 BMW engine that has very good detection.
Apologies if some of this post sounds naive or thick, I am new to this level of tuning. I know that some might say I need to go for a custom tune - live map - I think ultimately this will be the end result or VEMS - but I would much rather learn how to calculate this stuff myself and make the entire process work by myself - even if I end up getting someone else to do it / go for aftermarket EM.
The 034 tune seems to suit my short-term power levels, in theory I am unable to see why using an alternative turbo with the same or similar flow characteristics wouldn't work well. The problem is working out a suitable turbo!
