    Are Ebay Elipsoids any good

    Hi Guys,

I'm on the hunt for decent original Elipsoids but all the ones I've found so far have some yellowing off the reflectors, broken tabs etc.

Now then, I'm wondering what some of the ebay type Elipsoids are like, there are several varieties available, some with angel eyes, some with daylight running lights etc.

Are any of these ok looking? i don't want to go down the road of the chav look but the lure off brand new shiny headlights is making me have a second look.

Alternatively, if someone has a really good set they would like to sell drop me a PM.

    Cheers

Imho they look naff. No idea on quality but can't imagine they are great.
The OEM headlights are a crap design where the top tabs are concerned but I am pretty sure the housing is the same as non-elipsoid lamps. You can get the reflectors rechromed

Yeh i'm just not sold on them myself either, i've bought replica headlights in the past and they were just fine, this was on B6 A4 right enough. I've sent several emails to various re-chroming companies but only one has got back to me to say they couldn't do it. This was a company based in Glasgow, can't remember the name now.

I found some Elipsoids of a 99 Cab but they too are showing signs of fading/yellowing. This is with 107k on them. Finding a good set is not going to be easy.

I think this is where a few forum members have had theirs re-chromed:

They are not bad at all, i was impressed with the ones a friend of mine got few years ago. After 3,4 years of use appeared bubbles in the facing plastic due to heat, using hid would solve that. The lenses are the best part of the kit.

If i have to choose between originals and ebay ones, i would go for originals without doubting, ebay ones does not look as cool as the originals.

I have just completely striped my RS2 headlights and sent the for re-chroming at Dual-Metallising, they weren't that bad but they did such a good job on my 90 quattro lights I thought I might as well get them done as I am doing a total re-furb on the RS2 I can post some pictures of before and after if you want but it will be after the New Year as that is when they will start them, I will also have the costing by then .

I have done a before and after thread on my 90 headlights which where done by Dual - Metallising, cracking job

Some of the lads had mentioned that company to me so sent them an email, however as yet i haven't heard back from then. Not the best time of year i guess, everyone on the wind down the for the festivities. Have you got a rough idea of cost?

Perhaps i am better off holding out for Dual Metallising to get back to me before taking the plunge on a second hand set of Elipsoids.

Buy a new pair of LHD ones and convert to RHD, easy job just need to change the shields on the projectors, everything else is the same as RHD, I used a pair of projectors from some A6 lights I picked up on ebay for £40 the pair, enabled me to keep the beam kick down clip for driving in europe, resold the A6 lights with LHD projectors on ebay.de.

What's involved in changing the shields over? Is it just a case of simply disassembling the headlight and transferring the parts from one to the other or is there any fabrication type work needed to make it work? I wouldn't like hacking into a new set of lights if it can be helped. I've never stripped these headlights down to the bare components so not to sure what the setup is.
