  • Evans waterless coolant

    Anybody using this?

I'm going to be fitting a new radiator soon and can't decide whether to splurge the extra cash and get this too?

My mate runs a classic car garage and they use it on Triumphs etc, especially Stag V8. I have to wonder on a more modern car/engine like the online 5 that's in good order why would you need it?

Yep have it in mine, works really well. Not cheap but there you go.

I'd be interested in seeing it's specific heat capacity compared to water/coolant, I doubt it's higher.

I understand you run a prep fluid through to clean the system of muck and remove water. Apparently the coolant doesn't contain water so has a higher boiling point. My mate claims it works well in the classic triumphs/MGs.

I thought I'd read somewhere that it did offer a higher cooling capacity, but on checking this I can't find any evidence to back this up.

The main advantages seem to be longer life, higher boiling and freezing points and the fact that it does not pressurise the cooling system

For outright cooling I think water is hard to beat although I understand the other benefits.

                  Someone did some research.

Comparatively, the specific heat capacity of the various glycol solutions in the Evans products ranges from 0.64 to 0.68. So they conduct roughly half as much heat as does water.

I used it but not for long as the water temp were higher then using just water and anti freeze .

And if heard a story it's flamable too !
Story goes something like this jap car was on a dyno making big power a water pipe came off or burst cooling went on exhaust manifold and went up in flames .

I CANT CONFERM IF ITS TRUE BUT SOME ONE WE KNOW TOLD ME .

I've never experience high water temps, even with track use, so why would you want to move away from good old G13? You could always opt for a high capacity alloy radiator if coolant temps are an issue. It's damn expensive too!

Why is anyone trying to beat 30+ years of rallying experience with some magic coolant solution ?

The fact that you have to remove 97% of the old coolant means its a no go on the I5 unless you're rebuilding the engine as there is no way to drain the block. Even then I'm not sure how you empty the heater matrix.
