7A timing belt change/uber service advice

So I'm going to change the timing belt on my 7A quite soon and I want to make sure I don't think afterwards, "damn, I wish I had done X, Y and Z at the same time". I want to make sure that the engine is running well before i plough on with cosmetic issues and lowering it etc.

    Things I have...
Timing belt kit inc Water pump and Pulley
New radiator (after wasting money buying a "new, unused" radiator from a forum member that actually leaks. the radiator leaks. I don't know if the forum member leaks)
    Rocker cover gasket
    exhaust manifold gaskets

I need a VAG 2084 crank lock tool. Best price I can see is from Germany. €35 plus €15 delivery here.

I'll need threadlock (need to check if I have that already)

What else do I need or should I be thinking about doing at the same time as an uber-service? Clean/replace the injectors?

Any recommendations for HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm? Or just get dealer parts?

I don't have a manual so I'm planning to use various guides I've found online, such as these

    All input welcome.
    Cheers

If you're doing the cam cover gasket then worth getting an inlet manifold gasket as well.
    Camshaft end seal?
And there's a small idler in behind the timing cover too.
What about fitting a steel crank pulley?

Exhaust manifold gaskets is a whole new job and I'd recommend getting the car up and running again from the belt replacement before you tackle them.

      What's the threadlock for ?

        thanks John
So what's the standard crank pulley then? And where do I get one?

I'm trying to find part numbers here so I know I'll order the right parts. If I try to order in Finnish god knows what I'll get (wouldn't be the first time I've accidentally ended up with the wrong thing).
Got the part number for the inlet manifold gasket 034 129 717 K from here

Cheers Mike. Maybe I'll keep the EM gaskets for another time then as long as the old ones aren't blowing.

A couple of write-ups mention using thread lock on the crank pulley bolt. Should it not be used?

Chef makes steel crank sprockets, the original are cast aluminium, which work, but can crack. for the £40 more I went with a steel version from Chef. You can find them in the classifieds.

I would change front crank seal, cheap as chips, just make sure you don't crack the oil pump casing when removing(!)

I'd also budget for a bucket of degreaser, and some black paint to paint up all the belt shields/backing plates, main crank pulley.

I think the same asi Mike, why changing exhaust gasket, when is good. When is blew, than OK. Crank pulley its torqued as hell, so i am not sure that thread lock i necessary.

I believe the manual says to use threadlock, plus, a new bolt comes with it pre-applied (fairly sure I saw a picture of this on here somewhere).

Having experienced a crank bolt come loose more thane once, I would definitely threadlock it!

The manual specifies using a sealing paste on the threads and resting face of the crank bolt.

thanks gents. Good advice (particularly the bucket of degreaser)
The 7A process will be very similar to the 3B process right? I'm off to find a decent write up with pictures to educate myself further.

I wonder if a new crank bolt is needed?

To be honest I'm not entirely sure why I bought the EM gaskets. It was about 9 months ago and I was buying a load of other stuff from Germany and I think I just saw them and went "yeah, why not?"

WTF does "resting the face of the crank bolt" mean Rob?

**edit** did I read that wrong? I thought you wrote "testing the face"
                      Maybe i'm losing it?

Hi Noel, good to see you are still tinkering with these old cars. What it means is that the contact surface of the bolt head should have a light coating of sealing paste applied to it. HTH.

you can re-use the old crank bolt unless it's damaged.

I've never used threadlock as it's not required. A big torque wrench for 450 Nm is sufficient. Done 3 timing belt jobs on 7A cars so if you're not sure ask questions.

crank seal and cam seal should be done if they're showing signs of leaks. Otherwise I'd leave them undisturbed.

I always do all the belts at the same time.
