Unless it's broken - unlikely. If it's the original (native) splash guard, it's being pushed down by inner rib of the cam cover.

I have no side engine noises from mine at all since the rebuild. I'm on 5w40 8100 X-Cess Motul.

I know that chain can rattle if it has stretched too much. Tappet noise is very different from chain rattle. You should be able to make a distinction between those.

I'd get the cam cover off and check what's the play in the upper side of the chain between cams.

Interesting. I asked oilman and he suggested 5w40, might try 10w40 next time round.

I run 5w40 Castrol. I get tappet noise every morning which is more like knocking but chain rattling noise only occasionally? It's there for about 5-10 seconds and then dissapears. I have also replaced the cam chain and it ain't loose or anything.

My AAN did this when I bought it, changed the oil and filter twice within. 5k as the service history had missed a couple of services, rattle hasn't returned.

probably a bad hydraulic valve tappet
enough oil on the engine? what type of oil do u use?
u can see when you start the engine that the noise disappears when your oil pressure gauge goes up.......
also when the timingbelt is too loose you can get a rattle if the belt comes against the cover
