Engine and gearbox mountings advice needed

    S2 ABY Coupe 1996 101,000km.

I am thinking of replacing the engine and gearbox mountings.

Only reason I am planning this work is the age of the car.

Surely its time the 21 year old mountings need to be replaced, how long can mountings last.

I am also thinking about the long term reliability and availability of parts.

With the car having such a low km reading vs the 21 years old parts is replacing them the right thing to do.

    What do you guys think.

I suppose I could just buy the spares and keep them for if/when the originals fail.

Hi ive just done the same thing and changed my engine and gear box mounts whilst the front subframe and bushes were replaced etc, my car has done just 78000 miles from new and the bushes that came off were not bad at all the problem is finding oem bushes for the above. I went with poly ones from Albert on here

the car is notably stiffer but I also had the wishbone done also with poly bushes, its not my daily driver so its not too bad,
like I said its hard to tell if the bushes are shot until you remove them mine seemed ok but i changed them anyway
    hope this helps a little
    regards

So the mountings appeared to be ok? Do you now if they were they the original ENG/GBOX mountings.

Apart from fluid leaking is there a good way to check if the engine mountings need to be replaced?

Not really it's hard to tell and you won't really know until you take them off if your car has had a hard life I would be inclined to think of changing but at the end of the day it's up to you, I'm getting a little vibration where there was none before but that could be down to having subframes and wishbones done also ,if you decide I would go for the street density bushes unless you use it on track they will be stiffer than oem but more forgiving than the harder compounds, I myself was unsure about changing the engine /gearbox mounts ,but seeing as the front subframe /wishbones were coming off it seemed a good idea

I am keeping the car as a daily drive road only. I am looking to get a full set of standard OEM mounts.

Keeping the car as close to standard as possible , apart from a complete OEM RS2 power upgrade, software upgrade, injectors, ignition, crank timing cog, 996 Porsche brakes, rear brake upgrade, 17" rims and a 3" to OEM back box 2.5"exhaust system.

Like Vonbeck I also changed the GB and engine mounts while the front subframe was out. I used oem mounts and did notice a difference. The car felt more solid and less prone to driveline shunt. Do it!
