About to change my clutch release bearing - as it's a clutch out job, isn't it worth replacing the clutch at same time? Just been on the blower again checking a few prices, I can get the ABY clutch for £155 + VAT.
Is that a good price?
SOLD.. :(

I can only speak for myself , but if you're changing the release bearing, change the whole thing, cause once you've went to the effort of getting to the clutch it's worth doing the lot (5 mins getting the clutch itself out , hours of torture getting the other bits off & back on, get yourself some spare exhaust gaskets, steering rack bolts just in case you have probs getting them off...
When I worked for Vag I got the sachs pressure plate (exchange item), friction plate & bearing for around £200 and I thought that was a good deal !!! , are the parts OEM or from GSF or similar ???
Do it, its 8 hours labour or a bloody hard weekend if you DIY.....
I think I bought mine from VAG Parts and paid about £200 all in....

You would never do one in 8 hours, not an ABY. Ask Eric. IME its a good 10 hours work
Replace the whole clutch if i was you. But i would advise against fitting a "cheap" clutch. Sachs, LuK, or a genuine one are the options i would go for. Try VAg parts for a genuine one. I fitted one to S2driver's car this year and it wasnt badly priced.
Exhaust gaskets arent needed sometimes, but its best to replace if you can. Only difficulty comes with seized bolts on the exhaust!! BTDT!

Yep, top job done by Tom and the weight of the shift and clutch are much better and plus if the snub is sorted out and the gearbox mounts done too then most of the lash in the prop can be sorted too :-)
Forget the actual cost of the OEM clutch but i think with all the parts i ordered if was about £310inc (clutch disc, new pressure plate, gearbox mounts, spigot bearing, thrust bearing, rear crank oil seal and umm maybe some other stuff too
Not sure on the fitting but i'd have thought you could replace them with the g/box supported. Price wise I think they were about £20 +vat from VAGParts.
Are these the gearbox mounts ? I was looking at mine over the weekend & there is a lot of play in one of them. Could explain why my driveline is snatching now.
£155 sounds ok, a few people will debate the reliability/performance of some Luk clutches (see some of the threads in the Transmission section), the original P/plate was Sachs so I decided to go for that.
As Tom mentioned I took a good 10 hours to do mine , spread over 4 weekday nights as after working in the garage all day u can't always to be bothered to work on your own car.
It takes as long as it takes, I'd problems with steering rack bolts seizing then snapping, lost a propshaft bolt, knackered a couple of gaskets, It's a 2 -3 man job to get the box to the ground, and a 2 man job to reposition/align the exhaust back to the engine, you definitely need a ramp , I know people have done it on axle stands, but I can only admire their skill and bravery, you're gonna be using a ramp right ??.
I've seen one of our guys do the clutch on a 4motion Passat (same hassles as ours) in less than 6hours between 12 am to 6am and he's 55 years young with 30 years experience.
Good luck with the bearing/clutch change, I think we've enough bad experiences between us now to help you out if things go bad...
