    Crank shaft compatabilty?

hello, i would like to know if anyone has any knowledge on S2 crankshafts. i need a new crank for my 3B S2 as it is not repairable due to excessive wear on number 5 journal and damage to keyway. Is the audi 200 turbo crank the same, if not what other cranks will fit this engine?
also found that distributor was off a 1985 naturally aspirated audi coupe what other cars had the same distributor?
any help would be much appreciated,
    regards,
    louis

All 2.2 and 2.3 crankshafts are the same as far as I know so should not be a problem to get another one

    Cheers,
    Roger

Except that there are 2 different versions, forged one and cast one. Both will be just ok.

Are there? Never seen a cast one before, but might exist. I checked once, and think Family album said they are the same on all models, but I might be wrong.

        Cheers,

you may use all crancks, exept from the 1,9(!!) 2,0 and 2,1liters... 77mm stroke, the diesel 2,4 and 2,5 have too big stroke 95,4mm to fit in the block(deckheigth)..... you have to check out your OILPUMP and sutch things before you fit new ones....main bearing failure are quite rare on audi.....

Does anyone know how to spot the difference between the forged and the cast cranks?

I have two, one has the numbers 054 (out of an ABY) punched into it and the other 034 (out of a 7A), both look to be forged to me?

            Cheers

              Mark,

Traditionally you look at the parting line. On cast items it will be narrow. On forged items it will be wide.
The part numbering for these cranks is all over the place. 054 105 101 is the part number for the early RR. This has been superceded by the 034 105 101S which looks as though it went into the rest of the bigger capacity(2.2-2.3) five cylinder engines until its demise.
The only crank I haven't seen is the shorter stroke one used on the smaller capacity engines. Not sure whether this is cast or not.

                I beg to differ. BTDT!
Some cranks appear to have different journal sizes. Not much difference - 0.2 mm if I recall ?
I found this out when my engine seized at GTI Int last year and resulted in me having a bent crank. Found a replacement and made 300 mile round trip to pick it up and a further 200 mile round trip to drop it off at the mechanic only to find the journal sizes were different. This crank did apparently come out of a 20v turbo engine (RR if was given correct info).
Robin (twogo) ended up helping me out as he had the right crank (only 150 mile round trip to pick it up this time... lol, but still 200 mile round trip to drop it off).
                So be careful!
                Cheers

they both have the wide parting line so they are both forged.

                    No probs!

The only thing bothering me is that the later engine (ABY) according to you had the crank with the 054 designation and the earlier engine (7A) had the 034. As I said, it would appear that the 7A, 3B, ABY and the ADU all use the same crank, the 034.
Perhaps the bloke doing the stamping that day picked the wrong numeral!
Think I'm right in saying there is no part number on the crank itself to help identification.

There is also conflicting /confusing info on the web this SITE says that the later ABY and ADU engines uses the 054 crank and these two Russian etka pages 1 and 2 state that they use the 034!

                      Its a minefield LOL

Sure the crank hadn't been reground(right word?) ? 0.25mm is first step.

YES - this is correct - I thought it was hilarious that my first Audi (a KV engined Coupe) has the same crankshaft as the S2 and RS2. Fantastic... Different bearing shells but same crank.
